Hello Council: Serving the sound is the key to Choral Dance Choreography

Online group discussion about dance choreography in choral performances

World Choir Council

On February 28, 2025 the 19th edition of Hello Council—the first session of the year—was successfully broadcast live. Organized by INTERKULTUR China and supported by INTERKULTUR and the World Choir Council, the event featured distinguished guests: Ms. Susanna Saw, World Choir Council representative from Malaysia; Ms. Deng Qun, Artistic Director and Conductor of the World Choir Games Champion Choir—Guangzhou Little Skylark Children's Choir; and Ms. Chen Chengyuzi, a young Chinese conductor. The discussion centered on the theme "Singing and Dancing into the New Year: Dance Choreography in Choral Performances." Over 3,000 viewers tuned in for the live session, and the review video has since accumulated over 10,000 views.

Drawing from her experience leading her choir to a double championship victory at the World Choir Games, Ms. Deng Qun shared insights into the different considerations for dance choreography in choral works from both ethnic minority and non-minority regions in China. She also provided practical rehearsal recommendations tailored to each style.

As one of the Artistic Directors of the inaugural International Choir Competition Sarawak 2025, Ms. Susanna Saw not only introduced the upcoming event but also analyzed the importance of dance choreography from a jury’s perspective: "A dynamic performance is a delight to both the eyes and ears. However, excessive movement can distract the jury. Choreography must serve the sound—it should enhance the music, not overpower it."

During the interactive session, special guest Ms. Chen Chengyuzi introduced scenario-based discussions using the competition rules of the African Asia Pacific Choir Games & Grand Prix of Nations Mauritius 2025 and the 13th International Johannes Brahms Choir Festival and Competition. The panelists engaged in a lively discussion about the scoring criteria for dance elements across different competition categories, offering valuable insights and preparation strategies for participating choirs.

To mark the final day of the first lunar month of the Chinese New Year, Hello Council offered exclusive registration benefits to its fans. Project Manager Ms. Li Qixuan encouraged more Chinese choirs to take part in international competitions, stating: “Competitions provide an excellent opportunity for choirs to refine their skills. We warmly welcome more Chinese choirs to join INTERKULTUR’s World Choral Movement!”
