INTERKULTUR: A "Global Player" in Choral Music
The organization of INTERKULTUR is born by the idea of bringing together people of all countries, cultures and world views in peaceful competitions.
Right from the beginning Günter Titsch was convinced of the power of his idea to create "bridges of encounters". All people involved share the same enthusiasm for choral music. It resolves prejudices, opens eyes and hearts for friendships and lays the groundwork for a vibrant and peaceful togetherness that outreaches music. Within a short period of time, this philosophy has made INTERKULTUR an international top address for major musical events in the choral community. Today INTERKULTUR organizes every year up to 14 international choir competitions and festivals around the globe.
Among its members the organization counts leading personalities from culture, politics and business, as well as choirs and orchestras, clubs and cultural organizations: the "World Choir Council", a kind of United Nations of choral singing, is made up of renowned choral experts from 80 countries. They represent INTERKULTUR's musical network with app. 120,000 choirs with 4.8 million singers. The organization has offices and representatives in numerous countries and is supported by ministries of culture, municipal authorities and countless organizations.
Quality Seal MUSICA MUNDI
The MUSICA MUNDI label is a brand of INTERKULTUR and stands for the quality of all INTERKULTUR events, a smooth course of events and utmost convenience for all participants.
Since the first choral competition in 1988 the evaluation system for choral performances and the event schedule itself have been improved continuously. Experiences of international jurors and counsellors as well as the feedback of our participants were implemented into this process. The event concept was adjusted so that joy in international meetings of cultures as well as quality, fair play and pedagogical standards of INTERKULTUR events come first.
Alternatively the non-competitive participation in the international choral festival offers joint concerts with singers from around the globe – and this is also part of MUSICA MUNDI.
INTERKULTUR events are always international events and ensure a range of manifold possibilities for get-togethers and cultural exchanges. The huge interest of children, youths and young adults is also taken into consideration in our portfolio. Likewise we pay attention to the different levels of artistic achievements. Thus our competitions are not only attractive for top choirs but also especially for those groups who have only few or no experience in competitions.
Different levels of difficulty and numerous competition categories, sorted by cast and music genre, give consideration to the fair and transparent requirements. All events use the MUSICA MUNDI evaluation system (30 points system), the World Choir Games evaluation system (100 points system) and include nominations and placings scored at Grand Prix competitions. This evaluation is carried out by an international jury of choral experts so that the results of all INTERKULTUR competitions and choral categories become comparable and transparent. Based on this evaluation diploma and medals are being awarded and the INTERKULTUR world ranking list, the international ranking of choirs, continuously updated.
Pedagogical offers which provide further possibilities to participate in the festival and share the experience for non-competing choirs are inherent parts of INTERKULTUR events.
This includes artistic counselling from the registration up to the award ceremony, separate evaluation performances, rehearsals with international conductors and intensive discussions about the evaluation between conductors and international jurors. Lectures, workshops and seminars complete the concept of the INTERKULTUR events.
Everybody can be part of it
INTERKULTUR’s activities are not restricted to the organization of the World Choir Games, regional competitions and festivals, but also include the realization of continental events such as the European and Asian Choir Games. The philosophy of INTERKULTUR events implies that not only top class choirs are being admitted to the events but also all choirs from the base of the choral community. And all of them experience during these activities a new and diversified world of choral singing: Cheerful and uplifting, full of the unique joys of singing together in a team. Friendship concerts, competitions and festivals boost mutual respect and understanding between cultures, therefore giving a new quality to our common future in a world that is growing smaller.
During the last years the idea of competing has been expanded by several pedagogical offers which are now part of almost all INTERKULTUR events.
"From a personal point of view I was delighted to be involved. There was a lot of adjudication to be done, but everything was so well organised that it was very easy to concentrate on the job in hand. I only hope all the choirs were happy with our efforts!"
"We are very grateful to you and the whole INTERKULTUR organization for understanding all our problems and being so helpful and understanding from the very beginning. We had a great time in Austria. The organization of events was flawless so we were able to focus on our singing alone and to sing stress free. We also had the chance to meet some amazing people and listen to many fantastic singers. For our young and inexperienced singers these choir games were a chance to listen and learn and improve themselves in every respect and the Games were also a great test for our conductor. For all of us, it was an experience of a lifetime. The fact that we won Silver X in our category made our stay even better. Thank you again for your cooperation and straightforwardness."
"We had a wonderful time. I was very impressed with the organization and outcome of the whole event. You were always there when I had questions and needed answers. I can't tell you how much of my stress was relieved because of your quick responses to my many questions. The guides we had were wonderful and filled with such energy. We were truly blessed."
"On behalf of the crew and passengers of Theaterkoor Vinger in je Oor I would like to thank you for organising such a FANTASTIC festival! We have had a great time and have some of the best memories of our lives in our minds forever. Everything was organized in a perfect way, so big, big, big compliments to you all! […] We will meet again in the future, because this will not be the last time we joined an INTERKULTUR festival!"
"And a very big thank you for all that you did to make CANTA AL MAR such a thoroughly enjoyable experience, not only for the hundreds of participants, but also for the adjudicators. It was really a pleasure for me, not only to hear so much excellent choral singing, but also to enjoy being involved with the Interkultur “family”. The work you are all doing to promote our beloved art and to support such positive cultural exchange between nations is a rare gift to the world and I was delighted to be a part of it."
World of Voices
The World Choir Games unite people. Every two years thousands of singers from all over the world get ready to participate in the largest international choir competition. Their journey round the world gets them closer to the feeling: It's the taking part that counts!
The singers' success – a benefit for everyone
INTERKULTUR pursues highest standards, aiming for constant development and improvement in the interests of its participants and partner cities and organizations as INTERKULTUR is also responsible for the success of its local partners: During the World Choir Games in Cincinnati the local Convention & Visitors Bureau noted an economic impact of $ 73.5 million. The event also brought considerable image benefits in terms of international media coverage and attention with a publicity value of $ 30 million.
While INTERKULTUR, with its events in Germany, Austria, the Republic of Korea, Indonesia, Israel, Italy, Malta, Spain, Serbia, the Czech Republic, Sweden, Hungary, Malaysia, Vietnam, China and the U.S., has become a prominent player regarding international cultural exchanges, its founder is pressing ahead with his next vision: INTERKULTUR president Günter Titsch aims to connect his competition with the Olympic Games by having both events held in the same place. After all, both ideas are inspired by the same principles: peaceful competition for the laurels of victory in a spirit of mutual respect, regardless of color or ideology. Uniting the world's sporting and musical youth would be meaningful and conceivable – an ideal that is within our reach.
The World Peace Award, an earlier edition of the World Choir Peace Prize, was granted 2006 in Stuttgart. The Committee of the World Choir Games, consisting of renowned international choral experts, nominated the choir conductor Gotthilf Fischer for the first World Peace Award of the World Choir Games.
For decades Gotthilf Fischer has been engaged in choral music with his Fischer Choirs on the "Road to Peace" in TV, radio and concerts, bringing people together and overcoming borders by the means of music. Gotthilf Fischer has already been appointed as an Ambassador of the World Choir Games in 2000.
