Clearing up the biggest myths about singing in a choir

The truth behind the seven most common choir myths

About Choir Singing

Whether you're a newcomer to the world of choral music or a seasoned performer, you've probably encountered some persistent myths about choirs. At INTERKULTUR, we believe choral singing is for everyone, and we’re here to prove it. As the world’s leading organizer of international choir competitions and festivals, we’ve heard it all, from "You have to be a professional singer" to "Choirs are only for classical music lovers."

It’s time to clear the air. Here are 7 common choir myths – and the truth behind them.

Myth #1: “You have to be a great singer to join a choir.”

Busted: Many people shy away from choir participation because they think they’re not “good enough.” The truth? Most choirs welcome singers of all skill levels and many community or amateur choirs don’t require auditions at all. Choirs are often a place where people learn to sing better through practice, teamwork, and professional direction. If you can carry a tune and are willing to learn, there's likely a choir out there for you.

Myth #2: “Choirs only sing classical or religious music.”

Busted: While traditional choral repertoire includes masterpieces by composers like Bach or Mozart, many of today’s choirs perform everything from pop and jazz to film scores, folk songs, world music, and even vocal arrangements of rock anthems. At INTERKULTUR events, audiences can experience an incredible diversity of musical styles. Modern choral music is vibrant, inclusive, and constantly evolving.

Myth #3: “Choirs are only for older people.”

Busted: Not at all! Choral singing is for all ages. Children’s choirs, youth choirs, university ensembles, and workplace groups prove that singing together is a universal activity. In fact, many INTERKULTUR competitions include special categories for young choirs, showcasing the passion and creativity of the next generation of vocalists.

Myth #4: “You have to read sheet music to participate.”

Busted: Reading sheet music is helpful, but not a must. The truth is that you can learn almost any song by ear. For this reason, many people often don't even try to read music - it seems too complicated and doesn't add much value in their point of view. And so learning by ear is very popular with many choir singers. Nevertheless, the ability to read music in a choir is quite useful and if you study your sheet music regularly, it soon doesn't seem so difficult anymore.

Myth #5: “Choral singing isn’t physically demanding.”

Busted: Think again. Singing is a full-body activity. It engages your breath, posture, core muscles, and facial expressions. Choir rehearsals often include warm-ups that resemble light workouts. Not to mention, standing for long periods and staying mentally focused takes endurance. Singing together also releases endorphins and promotes better lung function – it's good for the body and soul.

Myth #6: “You can’t travel or compete if you’re not a top-level choir.”

Busted: Not true. Many choir competitions and festivals worldwide are open to choirs of all levels and abilities. INTERKULTUR events also offer competition categories for different levels of difficulty and experience. For many choirs, competition singing is less about winning and more about artistic development, individual growth and strengthening the community.

Myth #7: “Choirs are old-fashioned.”

Busted: Choirs are more relevant than ever. In today’s world, where social connection and community are more important than ever, choirs provide a sense of belonging and shared purpose. New technologies, cross-genre collaborations, and inclusive approaches have redefined what choral music looks and sounds like in the 21st century. From flash mobs to virtual choirs, this art form continues to innovate and inspire.
