INTERKULTUR respects 30 days mourning period in Thailand

Changes in competition program due to King Bhumibol’s death

Lanna Int. Choir Competition

The whole Thai nation is facing a very sad moment in their history in these days which also effects on the 1st Lanna International Choir Competition, which is going to take place in Chiang Mai starting on Wednesday.

After seven decades of a glorious reign, His Majesty the King Bhumibol has passed away last Thursday. He leaves a whole nation in deep sorrow for the loss of their father, protector and beloved King. (Read here the letter of condolence by INTERKULTUR President Günter Titsch to our friends and partners in Thailand.)

Being also a guest in Thailand, INTERKULTUR will respect the 30 days mourning period in Thailand which traditionally follows a king’s death. In this period no festive celebrations and concerts are allowed. For this reason unfortunately all Friendship Concerts, the Gala Concert and the musical welcome and marching in the hall of the Opening Concert cannot take place and had to be cancelled.

Of course this decision means fewer choral performances, concerts and singing together, but due to the circumstances and in respect to the host country this was necessary.

The Opening and Closing Ceremony, the competition in various categories as well as the Grand Prize Competition will take place as scheduled before.

In their mourning Thai people will wear black clothes for a whole year. The INTERKULTUR team and all international participants will show their empathy by wearing little black ribbons during the whole days of their stay in memory of the King of Thailand and in respect to the deep mourning of the Thai people.

News and photos from the event will be published as usual on the official Facebook page.
