First choirs arrive in Chiang Mai

57 groups from 7 nations will join the choir competition

Lanna Int. Choir Competition

Tomorrow the 1st Lanna International Choir Competition 2016 will start in Chiang Mai. Unfortunately, this first INTERKULTUR event in Thailand is tainted with sadness about the death of Thailand’s King Bhumibol. The whole country is in deep sorrow in these days.

Nevertheless the partners in Thailand welcomed the INTERKULTUR team and also look forward to meet a total of 57 choirs from China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Croatia and Thailand. The musical welcome and the marching in the hall of all choirs at the opening ceremony has been cancelled due to the 30 days of mourning in Thailand , but in spite of the current situation the hosts in Chiang Mai are wiled to present their guests a wonderful opening ceremony: There will be a performance of dances from the north of Thailand and some songs of honor for the late King.

The Friendship Concerts and the Gala Concert that were scheduled starting tomorrow will be cancelled as well, unfortunately. But there will be all in all 84 competition concerts during all competition days that will enchant choral lovers, visitors and participants.

The competition will start on Thursday with Children’s and Youth Choirs in the morning, followed by the Folklore category in the afternoon. On Friday morning Mixed, Male and Female Choirs will perform in front of the jury, later in the evening the Folklore competition will be continued.

On Saturday morning the last competition category will be held: Gospel & Spiritual. In the evening the best choirs will compete once again in the Grand Prize Competition. The Awards Ceremony on Sunday morning will mark the emotional final of INTERKULTUR’s first choral event in Thailand.

Despite the mourning period and the cancelled concerts we wish all participants an unforgettable event with many intercultural experiences and unique moments.
