Calella sings!
49 choirs from 24 nations will celebrate together the choral festival “Canta al mar” 2016
For the 5th time the sunny village of Calella invites to "Canta al mar - Festival Coral Internacional" on the Mediterranean coast. From October 19 to 23, 49 choirs from 24 nations will present Choral Music from their homes and engage in cultural exchanges, including from Denmark, Gibraltar, Indonesia, Israel, Latvia and the host country Spain. For the first time also a choir from Suriname will attend in an INTERKULTUR event. The festival is organized in cooperation with the city of Calella and Viajes Tauro S.L.
Both in Calella and in the Spanish metropolis of Barcelona the choirs will make concert halls and churches resound. The competitions in different categories – from Musica Sacra to Pop and Jazz - as well as countless Friendship and Gala Concerts will create a memorable festival atmosphere.
The festival "Canta al mar" will be officially opened on October 19 at 4 p.m. with a traditional choir parade followed by an official welcoming by festival organizers INTERKULTUR and Calella in the park "Pati de l’Ós ". With a first Singing Together session of the pieces "Amigos para siempre" and "The Peace of God", the participants will be attuned to the upcoming festival days.
In addition to the joy of making music, the musical education is in the foreground in "Canta al mar"! So Òscar Boada (Spain) will give a workshop on Thursday, October 20 at 11 a.m. in the Sala Mozart, where the singers will learn more about the Catalan musical culture.
Among the highlights of the International Choir Competition & Festival "Canta al mar" is the traditional Gala Concert "Music & Light", which will take place on October 21 at 10 p.m. in the church "Santa Maria and Sant Nicolau" in Calella. Surrounded by thousands of candles three choirs from China, Norway and Gibraltar will ensure a memorable experience.
With the beginning of the Award Ceremony in "Fabrica Llobet" and handing over of the diplomas on Saturday, October 22 the inner city of Calella will be the meeting place of cheers and tears of joy. During "Calella Sings" the participating choirs will start to sing simultaneously at 7 p.m. and to fill the entire city center with choral music.
For the first time in the "Canta al mar" history, there will be an Audience Award. During the “Fiesta de la Amistad” the price will be overhanded to the audience favorite. Everyone can vote until Friday at 7 p.m. at the festival office, Placa de l'Ajuntament 1.
