Top class choral music from South Africa
University of Pretoria Camerata will join the Grand Prix of Nations in Latvia
The University of Pretoria Camerata is an outstanding choir from South Africa, conducted by Michael Barrett. It currently ranks #22 among the 1000 Top Choirs of the INTERKULTUR World Rankings following a Champions Title in the Mixed Youth Choirs category of the World Choir Games 2014 in Riga.
In 2017 they will be back and join the Grand Prix of Nations Riga 2017 taking place in the Latvian capital again. Choral music at its best can be expected though!
But first, there’s a special challenge the singers of University of Pretoria Camerata and their conductor are facing: They are among the four finalists of the “Varsity Sing” TV-show and choral competition being held in South Africa since a few weeks.
Together with the No.1 in the INTERKULTUR World Rankings, the Stellenbosch University Choir and conductor André van der Merwe, as well as Renette Bouwer, a welcome juror at various INTERKULTUR competitions and her choir of the Johannesburg University as well as the Nelson Mandela Municipal University Choir they will compete in the final show starting 8:30 p.m. local time tonight.
By the way, the performances of Varsity Sing were all judged by South Africa R&B singer Loyso Bala, opera singer Marvin Kernelle and accomplished conductor Christo Burger, who has already won INTERKULTUR’s Grand Prix of Nations with his Akustika Chamber Singers in Germany 2015.
At the end of today one of the participants mentioned above can claim itself as South Africa’s best choir. We look forward to it and keep our fingers crossed for our friends!
