A joyful Opening Event in Hội An
The 8th Vietnam International Choir Competition has begun
In a festive atmosphere filled with music, light, and a big show, the Opening Concert of the 8th Vietnam International Choir Competition took place at the Hội An Theater. With over 1,000 singers from 29 choirs representing 9 countries, this intercultural celebration marked the start of five unforgettable days of music and friendship.
Hosted for the 8th time already in the heart of Hội An Ancient Town—now officially part of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network for Crafts and Folk Art—the event opened with warm words from local leaders and INTERKULTUR Artistic Director Johan Rooze.
The Opening Concert featured a vibrant selection of performances that captured the spirit of the festival:
TSIS Young Choristers from Thailand opened the stage with For the Beauty of the Earth by Greg Gilpin and the dynamic Storm by James M. Desjardins, conducted by Giovanni Sornito.
The Broadway Academy Choir from Malaysia, under the baton of Dr. Casey Broadway, brought the audience to life with Mak Inang, a traditional piece arranged by Vivian Chua.
DMMMSU Northern Chorus from the Philippines performed a powerful rendition of Piliin Mo Ang Pilipinas, arranged by Normita Bing Rio Pablico and conducted by Danreve Leo Gamboa.
The Opening was enriched by colorful performances by the Hội An Art Troupe showcasing the rich traditions of Vietnamese music and dance.
As the highlight of the night, all participating choirs came together for a joint performance of Music beats as one, composed by Låo Ban, arranged by Artistic Director Johan Rooze, and performed by all participants, conducted by both Johan Rooze and the event's Vietnamese Artistic Director and jury member Đặng Châu Anh.
From now until April 13, the city of Hội An will host competition performances, Friendship Concerts, and choral encounters in various historic and public spaces—offering audiences and participants many moments of musical excellence and cultural exchange.
We extend our deepest gratitude to the organizers, jurors, partners, and especially the singers who have traveled far to share their voices. May your stay in Hội An be filled with joy, harmony, and unforgettable inspiration!
