"Look at Cincinnati – out in full force. This crowd on Fountain Square is rivaling [New York’s] Times Square. And they’re all here for the World Choir Games."
7th World Choir Games
Cincinnati 2012
For the first time the 2012 World Choir Games were held on the American continent. The event exceeded expectations for attendance, cultural impact and awareness-building. Cincinnati residents were highly engaged in the Games with 4600 volunteers. The Parade of Nations at the Fountain Square with 30000 people was one of the events' highlights.
Approximately 15 000 active participants from 64 countries were involved in these Games. There was an estimated 7 530 minutes of performances – the equivalent of more than five days of uninterrupted singing – in concerts and competitions. A total of 106 Gold, 139 Silver and 19 Bronze Medals were awarded by the international jury. The Medal tally of the 7th World Choir Games is led by the United States with 76 Medals (23 Gold, 46 Silver, 7 Bronze), followed by China and Hong Kong / SAR with 53 (30 Gold, 18 Silver, 5 Bronze) and Indonesia with 17 (8 Gold, 9 Silver) and Russia (3 Gold, 7 Silver, 1 Bronze) and South Africa (10 Gold, 1 Silver). Germany won 2 Silver and 1 Bronze Medal.
The 2012 World Choir Games also included performances and appearances by Grammy Awards winner Kirk Franklin, who wrote ‘I Can – the Official Song of the 2012 World Choir Games”, gospel artist Marvin Winans and 2006 Dancing with the Stars Champion Drew Lachey.
Media stories (print, broadcast and online) ran in several countries, including China, South Africa, India, Indonesia, South America, and in high-profile publications in Germany (e.g. DIE ZEIT, tagesspiegel, Cicero) and in the USA (the New York Times, Chicago Tribune, Midwest Living and the Washington Post, among others). ABC’s “Good Morning America”, the No. 1 rated morning news program, broadcast live from Fountain Square on July 9.
A multi-pronged social media approach provided an informative, interactive experience for the Games’ participants and spectators throughout multiple social media channels (e.g. Facebook, twitter, Flickr, YouTube, and ChoirTV.com). Social media generated awareness, informed stakeholders of the most up-to-date news and provided opportunities to connect with international audiences.
The event was so successful, in fact, that INTERKULTUR announced at the Closing Ceremony that it has established a permanent international office in Cincinnati and has initiated discussions to hold a future event in the city.
"Cincinnati won (the World Choir Games) because of its music venues, cultural history and workability."
"Exhilaration from the word ‘go’ - the 2012 World Choir Games has changed us and readied us for better things."
"The World Choir Games saw Cincinnati USA galvanize around a common cause and welcome the world to celebrate the power of music and the arts."
