Vox Lucensis 2025 begins in Lucca
20 Choirs from 15 nations meet and sing in Tuscany
From April 12 to 15, 2025, Lucca will once again welcome the international choral world for the 4th edition of Vox Lucensis - Concorso Corale Internazionale. Organized by INTERKULTUR in cooperation with the “Luigi Boccherini” State Conservatory of Music and the Parish Community of the Historic Center of Lucca, this event brings together the magic of choral music and the charm of Lucca’s historic setting.
The artistic direction is once again in the hands of renowned conductors Giovanni Acciai and Sara Matteucci, who also teaches at the Boccherini Conservatory.
A unique opportunity for the city of Lucca, VOX LUCENSIS will present high-quality choral performances from around the world. Choirs from 15 countries—including Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, France, Greece, Ireland, the Channel Islands, Italy, Lithuania, Norway, Serbia, Slovenia, Sweden, and Turkey—will gather, bringing together around 800 participants.
The event will open on Saturday, April 12 at 18:00 in the Basilica of San Paolino with a Welcome Concert featuring local choirs under the baton of Maestro Sara Matteucci: the Youth Choir of the Boccherini Conservatory, the vocal ensemble Stereo-Tipi, and the Women’s Choir of the Passaglia High School of Music. They will perform Vox Lucensis, a piece composed especially for the festival by Lucca native Saverio Rapezzi, followed by the canon Dona Nobis Pacem, sung by all choirs and the audience. The evening continues with performances from Croatia, Belgium, and Norway.
The competition, part of the Boccherini Conservatory’s “OPEN” concert season, will feature multiple categories for a cappella and accompanied choirs, including sacred music, youth choirs, and chamber choirs. Venues include the Church of San Pietro Somaldi and the Auditorium del Suffragio. Performances will be evaluated by an international jury composed of Milena Dobreva (Bulgaria), Joanna Tomlinson (UK), and Sara Matteucci (Italy). Admission is free.
On Tuesday, April 15, the final day of the event, the Grand Prize Competition will take place at 17:00 in the Church of San Francesco. The best choirs from each category will compete for the "Vox Lucensis 2025" Trophy and a €1,500 cash prize (limited seating available!).
In addition, non-competitive performances are scheduled for Sunday, April 13 at 18:00 in the Church of San Pietro Somaldi (featuring the choir of the Machiavelli Institute of Lucca), and Monday, April 14 at 18:00 and 21:00 at the Boccherini Conservatory. Entry is free.
The event is held under the patronage of the City of Lucca, the Choral Association of Tuscany (ACT), the Province of Lucca, and the “L. Boccherini” State Conservatory of Music.
