"Sing Free!" – Come free your voice
Jay Clayton offers a Vocal Jazz Workshop
We are delighted to welcoming the international renowned US-American jazz and avant-garde vocalist Jay Clayton in our festival. In the course of the 1st Corfu International Festival & Choir Competition, which will be held from October 12-16, 2016 on the Ionian Island Corfu, Clayton will lead a workshop for all participants of the festival.
Under the heading "Sing Free!" the singers will be encouraged to sing free, to see their voice as experiment in order to improvise and to compose spontaneously. On this basis Jay Clayton will discuss techniques of jazz singing and will work intensively on her own compositions and adaptions of composition by the British jazz bassist and composer Dave Holland together with the participants of the workshop.
Since 1963 Jay Clayton experiments in the field of jazz music. Beginning with jazz standards of New York's music scene she quickly became a prominent part of the free jazz movement. Her highly personal and wordless expression is influenced by the new music and by the use of electronics.
A little foretaste of what you can expect in the workshop with Jay Clayton, can be found in the following video:
The 1st Corfu International festival and Choir Competition will be organized together with the music department of the Ionian University Corfu and the Municipality of Corfu. Dimos Dimitridadis, Professor of Jazz and Saxophone and Head of Jazz Studies at the Ionian University is glad about being able to engage such an international renowned jazz expert for the choral festival: "I am sure she will host a memorable workshop for all and will perform a world class jazz set".
All details regarding the workshop "Sing Free!" with Jay Clayton can be found online on the website of the 1st Corfu International Festival & Choir Competition. Registrations for the festival and the workshop are still welcome until May 30, 2016.
