A dream between coziness and history

Assisi: Italian UNESCO World Cultural Heritage and perfect venue for VOICES FOR PEACE

VOICES FOR PEACE

Assisi is a quiet and dreamlike town located in the Umbria region, near Perugia, which impresses with its friendliness, natural beauty and architecture as hardly any other city in Italy. The city is well-known as birthplace of Saint Francis, founder of the Order of Saint Francis, and Saint Claire, founder of the Poor Clare. Since 2000 the medieval city belongs to the Italian UNESCO World Cultural Heritage.

The Italian city was founded in 399 BC by the Romans under the name Asisium. An amphitheater, the city walls as well as the temple of the goddess Minerva (goddess of wisdom) are still almost completely preserved from Roman times.

Assisi is not only a popular pilgrimage destination because of its sacred patron saints, but also offers impressive views for architecture lovers, such as the Basilica de San Francesco. The construction of the double church began on the day of the canonization of Francis. The atmosphere on the church’s grounds is hard to describe – it’s like if you can feel the sacred heritage that lies in the air. That is one of the reasons why the Basilica of San Francesco and the ring wall (city wall) are amongst the most popular sights for travelers.

The old town of Assisi looks like a picture book: narrow lanes and steps, winding houses in Mediterranean style, picturesque squares and a variety of small shops invite you to stroll around the city. The city reflects calmness and a cozy flair, which one would like to enjoy especially during a walk in the warm sunset. The dreamlike landscape and the peaceful living together around Assisi suggest how Saint Francis received the inspiration for his "sun song", the call to the praise of God.
