Collegium Musicum meets Africa’s vibrant choral traditions

University of Warsaw represents Poland at the World Choir Games 2018

In 1994 the employees and graduates of the University of Warsaw established the Chór Kameralny Collegium Musicum Uniwersytetu Warszawskiego (University of Warsaw Collegium Musicum Chamber Choir) as they wished to continue and extend their choral experiences.

Since its beginnings the choir aspires to follow the medieval tradition of a “collegium musicum” – an academic society, created to organize and manage university musical activities and giving non-musicians an opportunity to perform music on a professional level.

The choir will showcase these traditions live on stage at the World Choir Games 2018 in Tshwane, South Africa when they unite their Polish choral sounds with the sounds of choristers from all continents around the world.

Apart from giving concerts at the university, Collegium Musicum, which consists of app. 30 singers, also performs in various Polish cities, is frequently invited to take part in renowned musical events and festivals and cooperates e.g. with the National Philharmonic, the Polish Composers’ Union and the Polish Radio and Television.

The a cappella repertoire of the choir includes both old and contemporary works of Polish composers, from Renaissance pieces to 20th century works of Karol Szymanowski and Henryk Mikołaj Górecki as well as 16th and 17th century pieces of Italian, Spanish and English composers.

The choir has also performed sacred music of Romantic composers and vocal-instrumental pieces from the 19th and 20th century. The choir has already performed in 15 countries on 3 continents, including Germany, Italy, France, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, Egypt and Chile.
