Special features of Chiang Mai

The characteristic landscape of the north is marked by mountain ranges exceeding 2500 meters, green valleys and Buddhist temples as far as you can see. The city of Chiang Mai was founded in 1296 as the capital of the former kingdom Lanna (1296-1558). It represents the biggest regional city and was nicknamed "Rose of the North". Its cultural heritage is being cultivated by the city of Chiang Mai until today and thus attracts thousands of visitors every year.

Located in the idyllic valley of the Ping River, Chiang Mai stands out due to its unique landscape and cultural monuments. Numerous Buddhist temples, in Thai called wat, were erected during the city's high point between the 13th and 16th century. They represent the Lanna style until today: extremely elaborate woodcarvings, gold leaf elements, bronze elephant statues and Buddha images.

Apart from the architectural characteristics Chiang Mai offers its visitors a wide range of culinary specialties. A multitude of local spices and spice blends, such as e.g. the Thai chili paste "Thai Prik", and the use of fresh vegetables make the Thai cuisine a culinary delight. The curry noodle soup "Khao Soi" therefore belongs to the traditional dishes in Chiang Mai and the north of Thailand.

The bright green and the biodiversity are being are especially favored by warm, humid temperatures. The rainy season lasts from May to September and features pleasant temperatures around 30 degrees Celsius and a high humidity up to 70%. Hence the best time for travelling to Chiang Mai is between October and February.
