Romantic Light Festival at the Schwanenteich

Participating choirs arrange the highlight of the competition in a musical way

Int. Robert Schumann Choir Competition

On the occasion of the 900th anniversary of the German city of Zwickau the 8th International Robert Schumann Choir Competition takes place in early summer for the first time next year, from June 6-10, 2018, and in cooperation with the renowned “Schumann-Fest Zwickau”.

Joint highlight: A Romantic Light Festival (“Lichterfest) at the Schwanenteich in the evening of June 8th – exactly 208 years ago to the birthday of name patron and composer Robert Schumann.

The Lichterfest looks back to a great tradition: In 1860 – four years after Schumann’s death – the first Lichterfest took place in Zwickau on the occasion of his 50th birthday and concluding the second Schumann Fest Zwickau. Back then the atmosphere at the Schwanenteich was alike a jolly folk festival. Also in 2018 it’s supposed to be an event for everyone again: A celebration to honor Robert Schumann featuring candle lights and music in a wonderful ambience.

Swimming lanterns will paint the water of the Schwanenteich in lights and will thus provide a picturesque setting. Framed by lights and lanterns participating choirs in the choir competition will then inspire countless visitors with international choral music at different open air spots around the Schwanenteich. Choirs will thus make an own contribution to the special celebration activities in the anniversary year “900 years Zwickau”.

More information about the program and schedule of the 8th International Robert Schumann Choir Competition 2018 can be found here. Choir registration is still open until January 22, 2018.
