USA and South Africa united in song

Participants from USA meet a Township Choir from Diepsloot

World Choir Games 2018

It’s a long way from the USA to South Africa, and therefore the Takoma Academy Chorale from the USA wanted to make the most out of it and live up to the World Choir Games 2018 slogan: Various Voices, One Harmony. Thus the group visited in the context of a Youth Development Program of the Wot-If?

Trust on Sunday, 8 July 2018 the Diepsloot township in the north of Johannesburg and met choir and community members from Diepsloot. Dire poverty, crucial underdevelopment and ramshackle housings mark only some of the conditions that the Wot-If? Trust seeks to improve by its special development programmes which focus on the overall economic growth and empowerment of the inhabitants.

Right from the beginning the two groups socialized and mingled and each group performed some of their own songs, including the South African and American national anthems. The event culminated in a joint performance that united both worlds in song.

Both groups wanted to keep the new friendships alive which came into being by choral music and thus the Takoma Academy Chorale’s biggest wish was that Diepsloot singers would be able to come and visit their performance at the World Choir Games 2018. But the money the group was able to raise only paid for the bus to Tshwane and left them in need for app. 6000 Rd of entrance fees. INTERKULTUR heard about this plan, stepped in and was able to organize free access to the World Choir Games for 30 of the Diepsloot singers.

This way both groups will again be reunited and the Choristers from Johannesburg can join the Takoma Academy Chorale not only for their concert but also watch competitions and other musical event during the World Choir Games 2018. INTERKULTUR wishes the Diepsloot choir unforgettable choral experiences!
