The 500 Choir Challenge

500 choirs sing A Mighty Fortress Is Our God

Latest news

On the occasion of the recently started Luther year 2017 due to the 500th anniversary of Luther's posting of his thesis, the foundation “Creative Kirche” is looking for at least 500 choirs that sing Luther's chorale "A Mighty Fortress Is Our God ". The activity is called the “500 choir challenge”. Whether a cappella or instrumental - each choir can participate and can help to collect donations for the aid project "Bread for the World”.

About the song

"A Mighty Fortress Is Our God" (German: "Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott") is a church song whose text and melody come from Martin Luther. Today the song is still a symbol of Protestantism and was thus sung by Protestants in times of distress and as a confession of one's faith. At the beginning of the nineteenth century, the song briefly learned a national charge as a fight song, in which Germany presented itself a self-imposed threat from all sides. Nowadays, " A Mighty Fortress Is Our God " is used as a weekly element in the Lutheran church year and will probably always be subject to different interpretations.
