Sing on Peace Day!

Jane Hanson and her vision for One Day One Choir

Latest news

Last year we reported on the international choral project "One Day One Choir", an occasion for choirs from all over the world to sing together for world peace on International Day of Peace on September 21.

The project has been created by Jane Hanson FRSA, a choral aficionado, project leader and educator, who is passionate about peace and choral singing and has researched, documented and broadcast the positive and powerful impact of singing together for many years.

She has already found her passion for singing in her early years, as she was making music with her parents. Later she moved to London to study at the university, and she began to sing in the Philharmonic Choir London. Despite her profession as a teacher, she is always looking for new challenges, as she describes herself: "…and I found myself travelling the world making radio programs about music and singing and peace and community for BBC World Service and I saw countless examples of people singing together in communities and benefiting from it in so many different ways. I specially saw that it truly brought them together and gave them a harmony and unity that nothing else could actually do. I particularly saw that in Mostar in Bosnia and I also saw it in places like Soweto, South America, downtown New York, India, at so many places. I also saw singing together impacting people from every level of community and bringing together people who would never be brought together if it wasn't for singing.

It’s well documented that our physical, emotional and mental well-being improve when we sing and that by singing together, we feel uplifted and connected. Singing communally has long been a positive part of holding communities together and I was sure it could do more.

I wondered if it was possible to get people singing together for peace, to create ‘one choir’ singing in their communities yet linked together by a global connection of some kind. Not a virtual project where people upload their performances from their isolated computer consoles, but one where they used the real physical and literal power of singing together.” From this idea the project "One Day One Choir" emerged.

Until today numerous of choirs from all over the world have already joined the project, which is dedicated to world peace, including choirs from Canada, Thailand, the Czech Republic, India, the United Arab Emirates, Australia, England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland and France!

The number of participating choirs is increasing year by year. Some of them support the project every time, said Jane. And registrations for "One Day One Choir" are still possible. "We would love people to sign up and join us either by singing one song or something dedicating they are already doing," said Hanson.

More information about the project "One Day One Choir" and the registration can be found on the official website.
