Honorary Artistic President of 10th World Choir Games passed away

South African singing legend Dr. Sibongile Khumalo passed away on January 28 at the age of 63. INTERKULTUR is mourning for a fantastic musician and Honorary Artistic President of the 10th World Choir Games Tshwane 2018 in South Africa.

Dr. Sibongile Khumalo was an award-winning musician, who has been lauded as one of the great singing talents of her time. Along with her career in classical singing she also established in the fields of opera, jazz and traditional African music. She has inspired the creation of new music by South African composers, both in the classical art song, opera as well as jazz genres. She received honorary doctorates by Rhodes University, the University of Zululand, and the University of South Africa. She was often invited as adjudicator for various choral and vocal competitions and festivals.

As Honorary Artistic President at the World Choir Games 2018 in South Africa she made a great contribution to the success of the event. She composed the Official Song of the World Choir Games 2018, named “Singomanqoba – We are Conquerors”, which she presented herself during the festive Opening and Closing Ceremonies of the event. Her performance was highly acclaimed by the audience and left a great impression on everybody on site.

South Africa has lost one of their greatest singing talents. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family, friends, beloved ones and her big community of fans all around the world.
