Playing with resonance
Vocal spheres and formations make the church Església de Santa Maria I Sant Nicolau resound
Numerous lovers of choral music, singers and citizens of Calella attended yesterday’s opening concert of the „Canta al mar“ – Festival Coral Internacional at 9 p.m. at the Església de Santa Maria I Sant Nicolau so that the church was completely packed.
The audience was attuned into the international choral sounds by music from Puerto Rico. The choir Coro de Cámara de la Universidad de Puerto Rico en Humacao presented a miscellaneous program with calm music pieces and also pieces that featured dance. By means of typically Puerto Rican rattles and a pied dancer they electrified the audience and animated them to join their rhythm.
As the second choir we welcomed well-known singers and old friends from China. The singers of the South China Normal University Female Choir also performed last week at the 1. Kalamata International Choir Competition & Festival. Even the audience at the Església de Santa Maria I Sant Nicolau was enthralled by the excellent intonation and the choir’s repertoire. The extraordinary acoustics in the church, which features 8 seconds of resonance, created a very special sound everybody was invited to enjoy. A truly great performance.
The repertoire of the Finnish female choir Merikosken Laulu offered a bit more of classical European choir music and the singers presented a varied program. The tender as well as the powerful passages of music were shown to advantage in a perfect way. The sounds reached the farthest corners of the church which sometimes even took up to eight 8 seconds.
The singers of the last choir at this evening, the Swedish chamber choir Riddarholmes Kammerkör, spread throughout the whole church and thus gave the audience an overwhelming Dolby Surround sound. The sound proved to be so emotional that some tears of joy ran down the cheeks of a couple of visitors. The resonance of the church created a fantastic sound experience. Each piece of music of the choir’s repertoire was presented in a different formation. Thus the choir provided a great treat for ears and eyes as well.
Overall this concert and its plenty musical highlights represented the perfect introduction into the festival that will follow.
We are looking forward to the first competitions and many further musical experiences!
