Music unites 550 participants from 20 nations

Great enthusiasm at the Sing Along Concert in the Vienna Konzerthaus

Sing Along Concert Vienna

One of them even arrived from Brisbane in Australia to be part of last weekend's "Singers in Residence - Sing Along Concert Vienna 2019" at the Vienna Konzerthaus: on November 17, around 550 performers met for a joint performance of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's "Requiem" in the Mozartsaal.

450 singers from all over the world, the Vienna Singakademie and the Barucco Orchestra were actively involved in the concert, which met with great demand in advance and had been sold out for weeks. The enthusiasm among the participants was correspondingly great. The singers especially enjoyed the great dynamics of the venue, which is similar to a concert hall for chamber music, whereby the fellow singers experienced a short distance to the stage.

For Grant Berry from Australia it was an experience of high significance: "I love that right here we’re walking in the footsteps of the great musicians and composers like Mozart, Haydn, Strauß. It’s just wonderful to be here and to perform Mozart’s Requiem in the city where he died, with people from all over the world – this is fantastic. I would certainly encourage people, no matter where you are in the world, come and sing in a Sing-Along".

For the first time, the Artistic Direction of this kind of concert was in the hands of Heinz Ferlesch, director of the Wiener Singakademie and founder of the original period orchestra Barucco. After the concert, he was particularly enthusiastic about the excellent preparation of all participants, who were very committed and pursuing a common goal: "It is actually not visible that the singers come from such different countries. The moment you have the same goal, it actually merges. And that’s beautiful; it’s the music, the joint action that unites."

Also the achievement of the conductor himself was highly appreciated by the singers: "We are very happy with him. He has an incredibly emotional way of communicating his wishes. I have to say that I liked him very much as a person and as a conductor. And above all, we are all amateurs, and he has a wonderful way of luring things out of you, even in this short period of rehearsing – it was fantastic!”
