27 choirs from 10 nations are coming together in the ‘Singing City’ for five days full of music

Hull International Choir Competition

Choir singers from all around the world are gearing up for the first Hull International Choir Competition, set to take place from April 27 to May 1, 2023. This event is a milestone, as it marks the first international choir competition by INTERKULTUR on British soil.

The event will feature a total of 27 choirs from 10 nations. They will compete in several competition categories, and will also perform in numerous Friendship Concert for visitors and other participating choirs throughout the festival days.

Bringing the participating choirs a big Hull welcome, the Opening Ceremony on April 27 will feature, among others, performances by children from a range of Hull primary schools participating in the choral strategy of Hull Music Education Hub. They will be singing a selection of British Isles songs from the past 500 years.

A special highlight scheduled on April 29 will be the Gala Concert, featuring performances by the Barnsley Youth Choir from Great Britain, the Tygerberg Children’s Choir from South Africa, the Cornwall Youth Choir from Great Britain and Vox Aurea from Finland. This promises to be a truly unforgettable evening of choral music, showcasing the diverse and rich traditions of choir singing from different parts of the world.

In addition to this concert, the internationally renowned Barnsley Youth Choir together with their Artistic Director Mat Wright will also be hosting an Open Singing session, giving visitors the opportunity to join in and sing with the choir. The Open Singing session will take place on the afternoon of April 30 and the result of what has been learned will be presented by the participants in the Closing Ceremony on the same evening.
