Finnish choirs to enter the stage in Istria

Studentkören Pedavoces and Ocarina Choirs join ISTRAMUSICA

ISTRAMUSICA

When in October the days get short in Scandinavia and the temperatures get low again, two choirs from Finland will head off to Istria in Croatia for a South European late summer experience: Studentkören Pedavoces from Vaasa and the Ocarina choirs from Porvoo will join ISTRAMUSICA – the new four weeks long choir festival by INTERKULTUR.

Pedavoces is a mixed student choir based at Åbo Akademi University in Vaasa. The choir consists of around 40 singers and has been conducted by Maria Timoshenko since 2009.

Every year the choir performs a spring concert and a Christmas concert. The choir sings further at the annual university inscription ceremony. On May 30 the choir is traditionally welcoming spring by singing traditional songs in the center of Vaasa during the festivities.

Pedavoces’ repertoire includes both secular and sacred music, ranging from classical compositions and folk melodies to more modern arrangements. Pedavoces has also received many original compositions by Swedish, Finnish and Norwegian composers.

The Ocarina choirs are part of Porvoonseudun musiikkiopisto (Porvoo Conservatory). The choir is bilingual and consists of four groups: Ocarina Training choir, Ocarina Boys’ choir, Ocarina Girls’ choir and Ocarina Youth choir. In 2016 about 85 children and youths sang weekly in the Ocarina Choirs. The main objectives for the choirs are to learn to sing and perform versatilely, experience a good team spirit and grow individually as an artist.

Both Pedavoces and the Ocaria choirs have decided to enter the choir competition of ISTRAMUSICA and will enhance the Mixed Choirs, Youth and Children’s choirs, Folklore and Sacred Choral Music categories.

Registration for ISTRAMUSICA in Poreč is still possible until May 22, 2017. Please find more information on the official event website.
