Calella sings again!
7th Canta al mar 2018 has been opened at the Spanish coast
On October 24, 2018 the seventh edition of INTERKULTUR’s popular choir festival and competition Canta al mar began in Calella. 42 choirs from 20 nations with around 1400 singers started this wonderful experience by joining the Parade of Choirs and proudly representing their countries in the colourful streets of the cozy sea town of Calella.
The parade ended at the Pati de l’Òs in Calella with an official welcoming event. The Mayor of Calella, Montserrat Candigni i Puig gave a welcome speech to all participants and an important message to carry out in the world: “We keep talking about boarders; culture and music are the only things that go beyond boarders and really unite people.”
After the official welcome three choirs from Japan, Israel and Latvia performed some traditional pieces from their repertoire, before all singers and choirs together performed “The Piece of God” and in the end “Amigos para siempre” – the anthem of the Olympic Games Barcelona 1992.
In the evening choirs, participants and visitors met again in the church Santa Maria i Sant Nicolau in Calella for the official opening concert to give a foretaste of what’s to come during the upcoming festival and competition days. Choirs from Sweden, China, Estonia and the Philippines were there to showcase their outstanding skills. The concert was a fantastic proof of the words uttered by Artistic Director Prof. Dr. Ralf Eisenbeiß during a press conference in Calella on October 23: “Each year this festival becomes bigger, better and the quality of the participating choirs gets better and better. This time we are proud to announce an exceptional top-class festival with a high quality level of participants.”
