5th International Conductors' Seminar in Wernigerode

Broadening of INTERKULTUR’s pedagogical offers

Johannes Brahms Int. Choir Festival & Competition

From June 29 to July 2, 2019 – in collaboration with the city of Wernigerode and the local Landesgymnasium für Musik – there will be a new edition of the Conductors' Seminar, which was already a part of the established and most popular International Johannes Brahms Choir Festival & Competition from 1999 to 2004.

The seminar addresses international and national students, talented conductors, choir assistants and young professionals and takes place one week before the 11th International Johannes Brahms Choir Festival & Competition 2019 in Wernigerode. Participants thus have the opportunity to extend their stay in Wernigerode and be part of the festival or compete in the competition with their choirs.

The internationally renowned choral experts André van der Merwe (South Africa) and Romāns Vanags from Latvia will act as workshop leaders and lecturers. One of the most famous youth choirs in Germany – the Radio Youth Choir Wernigerode, conducted by Peter Habermann –will act as the Studio Choir. Habermann is also the Artistic Director of the Conductors' Seminar, along with INTERKULTUR’s Senior Artistic Director Prof. Dr. Ralf Eisenbeiß.

An active as well as a passive participation (guest student) are possible. Active participants, as part of the seminar, have the chance to study and practice selected choir literature intensively with the Rundfunk-Jugendchor Wernigerode under the professional guidance of the international workshop leaders and to present the result in a final Closing Concert. The designated program includes, among others, works by Tomás Luis de Victoria, Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, Robert Schumann, Lajos Bárdos, Jaakko Mäntyjärvi, Vytautas Miškinis, Morten Lauridsen, André van der Merwe and Josu Elberdi.

During the ongoing events 2018 and 2019 INTERKULTUR grants scholarships for the participation in this seminar to young, talented conductors who have achieved outstanding results with their ensembles. The scholarship includes the participant fee and accommodation for four nights in Wernigerode. Regular participants may also book an event package including accommodation, but it’s not required.

Participant fee for active participants is 290€, guests students pay 150 €. Registration is possible until February 28, 2019 and can be made directly through our website.
