Competitions & Festivals

We are pleased to welcome choirs from all over the world to the International Choir Competition & Festival “Canta al mar” in Calella and Barcelona for the fourth time. The festival has become an essential activity in INTERKULTUR’s event calendar and enjoyed increasing popularity. From October 21 – 25, 2015 the city at the Mediterranean Sea will be made to sound by the variety of choral music. 49 choirs from 23 nations will celebrate the festival of choral music under the Catalonian sun.

After a colourful Choir Parade through the Mediterranean city of Calella, which will start tomorrow at 16h, the festival will be official opened and participating choirs will be welcomed by INTERKULTUR and citizens in the Pati de l'Ós in the park Dalmau in Calella. The Opening Concert at 21h with choirs from China, Finland, Puerto Rico and Sweden will give a foretaste of the musical variety, which Calella will expect in the following days.

From October 22 – 24 competitions will take place all day. Selected venues such as the Sala Mozart and the Església de Santa Maria i Sant Nicolau in Calella give the competitions a worthy setting. We are especially happy to officially re-open the Sala Mozart with our concerts after the renovation inside. Also in the Spanish metropolis Barcelona the singers will sing in great churches and concert halls. The competition in the category Chamber Choirs will take place on Friday at 20:30h in the Palau de la Música Catalana, one of the best concert halls in Europe. This is the only competition, for which the audience pay for the entry. All the other competition concerts are free of charge. Tickets for the Palau de la Mùsica are available online at www.palaumusica.cat or at the ticket office.

Beside the competitions singers will present choral music from different nations in altogether 12 Friendship Concerts in Calella and Barcelona, from October 22-24. The concerts enable to share the joy of singing, to get to know other cultures and to meet new friends. Furthermore Evaluation Performances with international choral experts will take place, in which the choirs will get valuable advice.

One of the highlights of the International Choir Competition and Festival “Canta al mar” is the traditional Gala Concert “Music & Light” on October 22 at 22h in the Església de Santa Maria i Sant Nicolau in Calella. A sea of light and charming sounds will make the perfect ending of the first competitions day

On Saturday, October 24, 2015 the small city Calella will turn into one big concert hall. At “Canta al mar – Calella sings” all choirs will sing one hour long at the street Carrer  de l’Església in Calella in a relaxed atmosphere. Under the direction of the international jury the song “Viva, musica mundi” will concurrently struck up at 19h by all choirs.

Following the afternoon’s Awards Ceremonies, where choirs get their Diplomas in a festive atmosphere and the Category winners will be crowned, all singers will meet on Saturday evening for the „Fiesta de la Amistad“, to celebrate together with a paella and sangria as well as with their new friends from all over the world.

We are looking forward to the days full of international choral music with choir from all parts of the world.

Recent information round about the Festival will be published here at the Newsroom as well as on Facebook and twitter (#calella2015).
