"I joined for the first time, 2 friends of mine got me hooked on it! I want to thank you! It was so wonderful, I didn’t dare hope that the conductor would guide 1000 singers so well! This resulted from the preparation of each individual singer, the motivation, concentration and also the charisma of Simon Halsey! A wonderful singing experience!"
Sing Along Concert "ON TOUR" Barcelona
Verdi’s Requiem at Palau de la Mùsica Catalana
Starting with the Sing Along Projects of the Rundfunkchor Berlin, the idea of these fascinating cooperation between professional and amateur singers became very soon an international highlight.
After a guest performance in 2010 at the Aspendos Festival in Turkey, the project went ON TOUR regularly from 2014. Performances of the major works of the choral symphonic literature were followed by a growing group, nowadays reaching around 1.500 singers.
The highlights of the ON TOUR series are the performance of Mozart‘s „Requiem“ in 2014 in Budapest, Schubert’s „Mass Nr. 6“ in 2016 in Vienna, Haydn’s „The Creation“ in 2017 in Riga and in 2018 Händel’s „Messiah“ in Paris. From 2015 on, this tradition has been part of the event series "World Festival Singers".
The next Sing Along Project ON TOUR will be the performance of Verdi‘s „Messa da Requiem“ in Barcelona together with the Rundfunkchor Berlin and the choirs of Orfeó Català, conducted by Simon Halsey at the legendary Palau de la Música Catalana.

Giuseppe Verdi "Messa da Requiem"
The Messa da Requiem is a musical setting of the Catholic funeral mass (Requiem) for four soloists, double choir and orchestra by Giuseppe Verdi. It was composed in memory of Alessandro Manzoni, an Italian poet and novelist whom Verdi admired. The first performance, at the San Marco church in Milan on 22 May 1874, marked the first anniversary of Manzoni's death. The work was at one time called the Manzoni Requiem. It is rarely performed in liturgy, but rather in concert form of around 85–90 minutes in length. Musicologist David Rosen calls it 'probably the most frequently performed major choral work composed since the compilation of Mozart's Requiem'.
For the performance in Barcelona, the Edition Peters, Nr. 4251 (Vocal Score) will be used. No. 4 Sanctus to be sung only by Rundfunkchor Berlin and Orfeo Catala. At no. 7 Libera me, the piano part with the soprano solo will be sung only by Solo-Soprano and the Rundfunkchor Berlin.
Rehearsals to prepare for the Sing Along Concert in Barcelona will be offered again in Berlin.
Further information can be found at the respective websites of the Friedenau Concert Choir and Lukas Kantorei.
Palau de la Música Catalana
The Palau de la Música Catalana is a concert hall in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. Designed in the Catalan modernista style by the architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner, it was built between 1905 and 1908 for the Orfeó Català, a choral society founded in 1891 that was a leading force in the Catalan cultural movement that came to be known as the Renaixença (Catalan Rebirth). It was inaugurated February 9, 1908.
The project was financed primarily by the society, but important financial contributions also were made by Barcelona's wealthy industrialists and bourgeoisie. The Palau won an award from the Barcelona City Council in 1909, given to the best building built during the previous year. Between 1982 and 1989, the building underwent extensive restoration, remodeling, and extension under the direction of architects Oscar Tusquets and Carles Díaz. In 1997, the Palau de la Música Catalana was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site along with Hospital de Sant Pau. Today, more than half a million people a year attend musical performances in the Palau that range from symphonic and chamber music to jazz and Cançó (Catalan song).

With several awards and performances at major festivals and after winning three Grammy Awards, the Berlin Radio Choir is one of the best choirs in the world. The exceptional breadth of its repertoire, its stylistic, absolute precision, delight in experimentation, stunning responsiveness and an unmistakable warm, richly nuanced sound all contribute to make it one of the world’s outstanding choral ensembles and partner of international orchestras and conductors like Sir Simon Rattle, Christian Thielemann and Daniel Barenboim. The choir is the permanent partner of the Berlin Philharmonics as well as of the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester and Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester and their conductors.
The Berlin Radio Choir’s experimental project series has attracted worldwide attention. With its annual activities for various target groups – the big “Sing Along Concert”, the “Liederbörse” (Song Exchange) for children and young people and the “Festival of Cultures” in the Berliner Philharmonie – as well as with the long-term education program “SING!” the Berlin Radio Choir invites people of all ages and walks of life to become immersed in the world of professional choral music.
As of season 2015/16 the Berlin Radio Choir will be directed by its new Principal Conductor and Artistic Director Gijs Leenaars. Simon Halsey was appointed Conductor Laureate and will retain his ties to the ensemble as regular guest conductor.
One of the country’s top amateur choirs, it was founded in 1891 by Lluís Millet and Amadeu Vives to disseminate a Catalan and world choral repertoire and hone the artistic excellence of its performances. It has its home at the Palau de la Música Catalana. Throughout its history the Orfeó has performed the most outstanding works in the choral repertoire and starred in premieres in this country of works like Bach’s “Mass in B Minor” and “The Seasons” by Haydn.
It has been conducted by leading figures of the international scene, including Daniel Barenboim, Simon Rattle, Richard Strauss, Camille Saint-Saëns, Pau Casals, Zubin Mehta, Frans Brüggen, Mstislav Rostropóvitch, Charles Dutoit, Lorin Maazel and Gustavo Dudamel. In recent years the ensemble performed in Konzerthaus Vienna, in the Sala Gulbenkian in Lisbon and at the Royal Festival Hall as well as at the Cadogan Hall in London. In 2016 it toured Italy conducted by Daniele Gatti. Since September 2016 Simon Halsey is the conductor of the choir, taking over from Josep Vila i Casañas, who was the director since 1998.
The orchestra is based in the Catalan capital. Since April 1999, the orchestra has had its headquarters at L'Auditori. Prior to that, from its foundation to 1998, the orchestra resided at the Palau de la Música Catalana. In 1944 it was founded as a new civic orchestra with the name of Barcelona Municipal Orchestra, created by the City Hall and promoted by the Catalan conductor and composer Eduard Toldrà.
Barcelona has since had a regular cycle of symphonic concerts with the collaboration of the main national and foreign performers and with the aim to make classical music reach the greater public and especially to spread the work of Catalan composers. In the 1994/95 season, it was given its current name of Orquestra Simfònica de Barcelona i Nacional de Catalunya, known as OBC. The current music director of the OBC is Kazushi Ono as of 2015. The current principal guest conductor of the OBC, as of 2013, is Emmanuel Krivine.
Simon Halsey was Principal Conductor of the Berlin Radio Choir from 2001 to 2015. He was awarded Conductor Laureate as part of his official farewell and will furthermore retain his ties to the ensemble as regular guest conductor. His enthusiasm, wit, perfectionism and passionate pedagogical dedication have made him one of the most sought-after choral conductors in the world.
Besides his work as a conductor and choral trainer, Halsey is also in demand as a pedagogue. In addition to his chair in choral conducting at the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama in Cardiff this recipient of two honorary doctorates took up a post at the University of Birmingham in autumn 2012. With the Berlin Radio Choir he established the Berlin International Masterclass. His teaching activities also include numerous guest lectureships – he has a particularly close association with the choral department of Yale University. In autumn 2011 his book on choral conducting “Chorleitung: Vom Konzept zum Konzert“ has been published in the Schott series Master Class.
For his outstanding contributions to choral music in Germany, Simon Halsey was awarded the Bundesverdienstkreuz (Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany) in 2010. In March 2015 he was presented by Queen Elizabeth II with Her Majesty’s Medal for Music, and was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in June 2015.
