Franz Schubert Choir Competition proudly celebrates anniversary edition

1600 singers perform in Vienna to honor the great composer

For the 30th time already the Europan capital of Music, Vienna invites for an international choir competition from May 4-8, 2016. The anniversary event comes along with a huge Sing Along Concert with the Berlin Radio Choir and conductor Simon Halsey. All in all 1600 singers will present choral music from 19 nations at the “30th International Franz Schubert Choir Competition & 3rd Sing’n’Joy Vienna”.

Following a first Friendship Concert on Wednesday, May 4 at 8pm in the Schubert Church Vienna, featuring the international choral scene in a non-competitive concert, the festival will officially be opened on Thursday evening, 7:30pm in the Votiv Church. The opening concert will present music by choirs from Austria, Philippines, Denmark, Russia and South Africa. Representatives from the city of Vienna as well as from the organizers Schubert-Gesellschaft Wien-Lichtental and INTERKULTUR will warmly welcome the international choirs in the Austrian capital.

The competitions will happen on May 6 and 7 in the Schubertsaal of Vienna Concert Hall and will be held in categories like Children and Youth Choirs, Chamber Choirs, Vocal ensembles and Sacred Choral Music. Apart from the competitions the international choirs will gather again for a Celebration Concert on May 6 at 8 pm in the Schubert Church to impress Vienna residents with choral music from different parts of the world.

On May7, 2016 the traditional Grand Prize Competition takes place, where the competition’s best choirs present their skills once again their skills and sing for the overall win. Afterwards all competition results will be announced and the Grand Prize Winner will be awarded.

The artistic highlight of the festival will be the associated Sing Along Concert on May 8, 2016 at 6 pm in Vienna Concert Hall. Honoring the name patron of the event, Franz Schubert the singers will present his Mass No. 6 in E flat major together with the Berlin Radio Choir and conducted by Simon Halsey.

Admission to all competitions and Friendship Concerts is free. Tickets for Grand Prize Competition and Sing Along Concert can be purchased through the ticket shop of Vienna Concert Hall at www.konzerthaus.at.
