A Golden Celebration of Choral Music in Calella and Barcelona

Second edition of SING FOR GOLD welcomes 50 choirs from 32 nations

SING FOR GOLD

This year a total of 50 choirs from 32 nations, with roughly 1,500 participants, have traveled to Calella again to take part in the second edition of SING FOR GOLD – The World Choral Cup in Catalonia, Spain.

During the festival days the program features not less than 84 competition performances in Calella and Barcelona, as well as numerous Friendship Concerts. In Barcelona, the Auditori del Conservatori del Liceu, a renowned concert venue, will be part of the event for the first time and open its doors for children's and adult choirs to perform there on October 26.

The festival kicked off in the afternoon with a vibrant Choir Parade through the streets of Calella, ending in the Pati de l'Ós for an Opening Event filled with singing and dancing of all participants. Choirs from Zimbabwe, Estonia and Mexico were the first to perform on stage in this year’s event, setting the stage for much more to come in the following days.

In the evening, everyone gathered again for the official Opening Concert in the Església de Santa Maria i Sant Nicolau, with choir performances by Cor Vivaldi, representing the host country, as well as choirs from Peru and Georgia, creating a beautiful musical start to the event.

Apart from the competitions during the coming festival days, more of the event’s special highlights include:

  • “Midnight Sounds”, a candlelit choir concert, which will take place on October 25 at 22:00 in the Església de Santa Maria i Sant Nicolau.
  • “A Little Jazz Mass” by Bob Chilcott, celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. Singers from Catalonia have rehearsed the piece in advance and will perform it on October 27 at 13:30 in the Església de Santa Maria i Sant Nicolau, conducted by the composer himself, who is also a member of the jury.
  • The grand finale is the competition for the “WORLD CHORAL CUP”, where the best choirs of the festival will compete once more on October 27 at 15:00 in the Pati de l'Ós.

After the final World Choral Cup competition, which is followed by a cheerful Awards Ceremony, choirs will fill the streets once again with music during “Calella Sings,” before they gather on the beach for a "Fiesta de la Amistad" – a wonderful way to end the event together with all participants.

Entrance to all events is free of charge! You can find more information in the SING FOR GOLD official program book.
