The Jazz Choir of the University of Cologne
INTERKULTUR presents the participating choirs of the World Choir Games 2016
We are pleased to introduce the choirs, which will attend the biggest choral event worldwide: The World Choir Games 2016 in Sochi, Russia. The following ensemble, we would like to present, comes from Germany – The Jazz Choir of the University of Cologne.
In 2008 the young choir was founded by Dietrich Thomas, a teacher, conductor, pianist and arranger. As the name suggests, the choir consists mostly of students or former students of the University of Cologne.
The choir's vast repertoire contains a cappella songs, but also songs accompanied by piano or by a band. Apart from Jazz standards, the choir covers everything from pop music favorites to sophisticated works close to the threshold of contemporary classic and jazz. Reflecting its eclectic repertoire the choir performs its songs enthusiastically and artistically in accordance with the respective genres presented.
The choir has had the opportunity to perform in different contexts such as festivities and regular concerts at the University of Cologne, but was also featured in extraordinary public appearances, e.g. during the Eight Bridges Festival ("Acht Brücken Festival") for contemporary music in 2012 as well as an appearance in Cologne's philharmonics in 2011. During the federal competition for choir in Dortmund (2013) and the German Choir Competition in Weimar (2014) the choir gathered a lot stage experiences. In Weimar the jazz choir received the second place, its best success so far.
This year the singers will perform together with international choirs in the biggest choral competition and will extend their experiences on the international level. We are looking forward to the Jazz Choir of the University of Cologne!
