4th Vietnam International Choir Competition
A unique choir competition in fascinating Vietnam
Since the outstanding success of the first event in 2011 INTERKULTUR organizes biannually the International Choir Competition Vietnam in the city of Hội An. From that time on the event has been increasing and has now become an inherent part of international choir tours.
The setting of the competition is located directly at Hội An’s coast and provides a stunning panorama for the performances.
In cooperation with the Vietnamese central government, the provincial government of Quang Nam and the city council of Hội An INTERKULTUR offers choirs from all parts of the world the possibility to discover the beauty of this country and to combine this exciting journey with a participation in an international choir competition.

Evaluation Performance
For non-competing choirs
- three (3) pieces of the choir’s own choice
- performed before a panel of qualified international jurors who provide immediate positive artistic and pedagogical advice for improvement
- certificates of participation will be awarded, as well as evaluation ratings and recommendation letters for future INTERKULTUR competitions upon request

Singing time: maximum 15 minutes
Accompaniment: possible
Duration: 45 minutes

- presentation of competition program the day before competitions begin
- for interested choirs it is recommended to arrive on July 4 already
- performed before a panel of qualified international jurors who provide immediate positive artistic and pedagogical advice for improvement
- evaluation does not involve preliminary decisions regarding the competition result

Individual Coaching

Participating choirs may register to perform together with other international choirs. Choirs must prepare approximately 20 minutes of their own music pre-approved by the artistic committee. The concert should be preferably a cappella or with own instruments (Piano or E-Piano can be provided upon request).
Please be aware that several friendship concerts are planned open air. In the event that weather conditions do not allow this, some concerts may be cancelled due to the weather. The organizers will try to manage alternatives but choirs do not have any legal claim to this.
Choirs can also take part in Friendship Concerts ONLY (Non-competitive Festival Participation).
The slogan of all INTERKULTUR events is “Singing together brings nations together”. This also applies to the “4th Vietnam Int. Choir Competition” in Hoi An!
Therefore one part of the Opening Concert and the Closing Ceremony will be a so called “Singing together” conducted by one of the Artistic Directors of the event, Dang Chau Anh (Vietnam).
The song that we will all sing together is the Vietnamese piece Hòa Nhịp Con Tim (Heart Rhythm), which will give a nice insight into Vietnamese music.

Prof. Dr. Ralf Eisenbeiß
Ralf Eisenbeiß was born in 1952 in Zeulenroda. After his secondary school examination he studied pedagogy, German philology and musical education. He received his PhD in 1979 at the Pedagogical University of Zwickau. From 1978 to 1981, he studied choir and orchestra conducting at the Franz Liszt Conservatory in Weimar.
Ralf Eisenbeiß was working as the director of the choral department at the Pedagogical University in Zwickau and appointed professor for choir conducting and choral singing in 1987. He was conductor of the renowned Pedagogical University Zwickau Choir. With his choir he performed a wide repertoire of compositions for a cappella choirs and with orchestra, too. Under his direction the choir won numerous prizes at national and international choir competitions.
Ralf Eisenbeiß was lecturer at the central seminar for choral conductors in Berlin and organized numerous workshops himself. He often appears as guest conductor at home and abroad. Since almost 30 years he works as artistic director of INTERKULTUR. Ralf Eisenbeiß is founder of the Int. Robert Schumann Choir Competition in Zwickau and one of the founders of the World Choir Games. Since 1992 he was responsible for more than 150 international competitions of INTERKULTUR in Germany, Italy, Korea, Indonesia, China, Austria, Spain, USA and other countries. Ralf Eisenbeiß is very often invited as a juror in national and other international choir competitions all over the world.
Châu Anh Đặng (Vietnam)
Dang Chau Anh received her master degree in choral conducting and music education at the Vietnam National Academy of Music and Malmo Academy of Music (Sweden).
She is head of conducting subject in Vietnam National Academy of music and a member of the International Society for Music Education. She is the World Choir Council representative of Vietnam.
Dang Chau Anh has worked 20 years as chorus master, artistic director and conductor for children choirs, choir of vocal faculty, musicology- composing- conducting faculty of Vietnam National Academy of music, Vietnam SolArt and Hanoi International School. She is known as a pioneer in the field of choir and music education in Vietnam.
Together with the Vietnam SolArt Choir she attended many events and festivals of Vietnam television as well as in the role of an artistic director, she led the choir to many titles in competition such as: Gold Medal, Audience Prize and Best Performance in International Johannes Brahms Choir Festival in Wernigerode, Germany.For several years she was guest conductor in Children of the World in Harmony and The Voices Without Border in Petoskey, USA.
She is a frequent juror at choir competitions, such as the Vietnam International Choir Competition, in the Philippines, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Malaysia and Spain among others. Dang Chau Anh is also well-known by Vietnam Television audience as M.C, Music expert, Jury of many music programs and competitions on Vietnam Broadcasting System over the whole country.

Tommyanto Kandisaputra (Indonesia)
Tommyanto Kandisaputra is the founder, music director and conductor of Studio Cantorum Bandung Choir & Orchestra, which actively performs important music repertoire in Indonesia.
He is working as voice consultant and conducts many choir development programs all over Indonesia for singers and conductors by giving choral seminars, workshops, voice building, choir clinics and organizing competitions.
He is the chairman and founder of the Bandung Choral Society that organizes concerts and collaborations, symposium on Church Choral Music since 2003 until now. This year, he organize the 5th Symposium on Church Choral Music.
He was a World Choir Council member. He is a chairman of INTERKULTUR Indonesia since 2006.
Tommyanto Kandisaputra was the Artistic Director of The 1st Asian Choir Games in November 2007, taking place in Jakarta/ Indonesia. Also, Tommyanto was the Artistic Director of the North Sulawesi International Choir Competition 2008 in Manado and the Tomohon International Choir Competition 2009 and 2010 in North Sulawesi, Indonesia. Now he organizes the Bandung International Choir Competition in his home town and the successful Bali International Choir Competition in Denpasar every year. And now he have been organizing another big Choral event "INDONESIA CHOIR FESTIVAL" in Indonesia.
At the end of 2014, he had been asking to be the Representatives of Indonesia for One Asia Cultural Ambassador organized by Music for one Foundation, South Korea. This organization dedicated to working with children and communities worldwide to reach their full potential through music and music education.
Recently, he conducted Taipei Philharmonic Youth Choir, May 4 performed the richness of Choral Music from Indonesia at National Concert Hall in Taipei, Taiwan.
Ko Matsushita (Japan)
Ko Matsushita graduated at the top of his class from the Kunitachi College of Music, Department of Composition, and went on to study chorus conducting under the late prof. Reményi János, and prof. Erdei Péter in Budapest and Kecskemét (Kodály institute), Hungary.
He is currently the conductor and artistic director of 14 choirs, which are often invited to perform in Japan, Europe, America, Canada, and Asia. They have also achieved excellent showings in the choral circuit and won awards in international competitions.
A prolific composer and arranger, Matsushita’s works are performed around the world. His compositions vary widely, ranging from works based on traditional Japanese music, Masses, motets, to etudes for choirs.
Besides conducting and composing, Matsushita is also an active workshop clinician and lecturer both within and outside Japan.
Most recently, his choir “The Metropolitan Chorus of Tokyo” was invited to the National Conference of the American Choral Directors Association in Salt Lake City, USA in 2015.
In 2005, he became the first Asian to receive the“Robert Edler Prize for Choral Music” in recognition of his outstanding achievements worldwide in conducting, composing, performance, and education within the field of choral music.
He is currently the Artistic director of the Tokyo Choral Alliance KOYUKAI and Karuizawa International Choral Festival, a board member of the Tokyo Choral Association, as well as a member of the Japan Choral Directors Association, the International Kodaly Society, and a representative of the Workshop of the Choral Expression. Furthermore he is a member of Japan Composers & Arrangers Association.
Nguyen Thieu Hoa (Vietnam)
Nguyen Thieu Hoa was born in a traditional Vietnamese music family. In his youth he attended an elementary course of music at the Hanoi National Conservatory of Music with the age of 11 years.
In 1970, he studied French horn and choir conducting at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory of Music in Moscow. In 1976, Nguyen Thieu Hoa was selected to study conducting of symphony orchestra and opera with professor Leo Ginzburg, the mentor of many world famous conductors and later with professor Kitaenko. In 1982 he has graduated from the Tchaikovsky Conservatory of Music with excellent grades.
Nguyen Thieu Hoa has performed with different famous artists: People' Artist Dang Thai Son (Vietnam), Teko Maehashi (Japan), Ilinka Dumitrescu (Romania), Philippe Dorn (France).
In September 2002, he was invited to Pusan (Korea) as a conductor of the Opening Show of the 14th Asian Festival.
In 2006 he was invited as music director and conductor for the Choir Besetoha Festival.
At present, Nguyen Thieu Hoa is emeritus artist of Vietnam, the dean of Department for musicology, composing and conducting at Hanoi National Conservatory of Music as well as the principal conductor of the Hanoi Philharmonic Orchestra.
Nguyen Thieu Hoa was awarded several prizes by the Vietnam Artists Association.
Johan Rooze
Johan Rooze studied Piano and Conducting at the Utrecht Conservatory, the Netherlands. Later he went to the U.S. to specialize in Jazz Piano, Singing and Arranging.
He was founder and 23 years Musical Director of the Utrecht University Vocal Group “Dekoor”. They won many prices such as The Dutch Choir Festival, The International Vocal Group Festival and the “Idols for choir” TV show, “Korenslag” 2007 in the Netherlands. He was Conductor of the Utrecht Student Symphonic Choir and Orchestra. With these choirs he toured all over the world. Johan Rooze founded the “Dudok-Ensemble”, an outstanding Project Choir, conducted the monthly Bach Cantatas in Utrecht and was guest conductor with the National Radio Choir.
Furthermore he was Professor for Vocal Jazz, Conducting and Arranging at the Conservatories of Rotterdam and Alkmaar, a member of the board of Musical Advisors for the Dutch Royal Christian Music Association and Artistic Director for the International Choir Festival, Netherlands 2005.
In 2008 he moved to South Korea and teaches Choral Music and Jazz Piano at the Yeongnam University. He is musical director of a new Jazz Choir (Yaenoeul Jazz Singers) and in 2010 he founded the professional Daegu Students Choir. He is a frequent guest conductor with other choirs. Besides his choral work he is very active as a Jazz Pianist and Arranger. He works as Artistic Director for INTERKULTUR and is a frequently asked adjudicator, speaker and workshop-leader internationally.
Beverly Shangkuan-Cheng (Philippines)
Dr. Beverly Shangkuan-Cheng is the President of the Philippine Choral Directors Association, Associate Professor of Music at the University of the Philippines, Artistic Director of the Las Piñas International Bamboo Organ Festival, and Music Director of the New Millennium Evangelical Church.
She is a First Prize Winner at the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) National Graduate Conducting Competition.
Highlights of the 2023 Season include serving as one of the artistic directors for the World Symposium on Choral Music, being a featured presenter at the American Choral Directors Association National Conference, and serving as guest conductor of the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra. Performance and adjudication engagements have brought her to South Africa, Germany, Sri Lanka, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, China, Spain, Vietnam, Portugal, and Singapore. She also regularly leads workshops in different parts of the Philippines.
Dr. Shangkuan-Cheng received a Bachelor of Music (summa cum laude) from the University of the Philippines, a Master of Music from the Yale School of Music and the Yale Institute of Sacred Music, and a Doctor of Musical Arts from the University of Michigan.
Aida Swenson (Indonesia)
Aida Swenson is one of Indonesia‘s strongest forces of choral music development. A founder and conductor of the Indonesian Children‘s & Youth Choirs- Cordana, who have gathered international recognitions and awards, and have been invited to perform in major cities worldwide.
As a graduate of the Westminster Choir College, Princeton, USA and as a sought after clinician, Aida Swenson conducts numerous workshops and adjudicates national and international events. Her activities as a juror includes in: USA, England, Germany, Vietnam and Singapore.
Aida Swenson has spent many years traveling throughout Indonesia creating and leading choirs, giving masters classes, and training choral conductors. However, her professional endeavors are largely but not limited to her choral clinician activities. Her professional activities include: Council Member of the World Choir Games for Indonesia; Member of the Advisory to INTERKULTUR‘s World Choir Games; Chairman of the Foundation for the Development of Choral Music in Indonesia; Member of Advisory of the Foundation of Church Music; Member of Artistic team of Polyfollia World Showcase; Member of the committee APCS-IFCM; Artistic Director of National Christian Universities Choir Competition in Indonesia.
Aida Swenson is featured in the “World Who is Who in Choral Music”. Her personal commitment to her musical endeavors in Indonesia is not only centered on her vision in furthering the quality of children‘s choral development. Aida is a pillar of change, of progression, and of energy to achieve unassailable quality in choral music in Indonesia and internationally.
