From grass skirts to churchly robes

Folklore, Chamber Choir & Musica Sacra by golden voices from Indonesia

World Choir Games 2018

Many talents slumbering in one choir: One of the most versatile groups which will attend the World Choir Games 2018 in Tshwane, South Africa, truly is the Iyakoko Patea Choir from Indonesia. Whether they perform folklore in grass skirts or sacred music in churchly robes – their appearance on stage regularly amazes the audience.

Their repertoire ranges from traditional Papuan music and dances up to pieces for chamber choirs and sacred music and thus one of their most successful achievements was the choir’s performance at the World Choir Games 2014 in Riga where they gained medals in all three music styles: A gold medal for Folklore category, two silver medals for the categories Mixed Chamber Choir and Musica Sacra, and one bronze medal for Scenic Folklore.

Iyakoko Patea, which means “golden voice”, was established in April 2006 and is currently conducted by Maradong Choky Simanjuntak. The main aim of the 52 choristers from Timika, Kuala Kencana and Tembagapura is to channel their mutual passion of singing and this passion is bound to sweep their audience in from their seats once again.
