What’s behind "O Magnum Mysterium"?

Lauridsen allows workshop attendees deep insights in his musical work

Golden State Choral Trophy

Morten Lauridsen is one of the most frequently performed American choral composers. During the choral festival Golden State Choral Trophy inviting international choirs to a musical competition from November 20-24 in Monterey/California, the US American composer will hold a workshop referring to his most important choral works like "Mid-Winter Songs", "Madrigali", "Les Chansons des Roses", "Lux Aeterna" und "Nocturnes".

Lauridsen is one of the most famous American composers of choral music and holder of the National Medal of the Arts. His works are holding a permanent place in the standard vocal repertoire of the 21st Century. Seven vocal cycles, instrumental works and his series of a cappella sacred motets are regularly performed throughout the world by distinguished artists and ensembles.

It means a lot to Morten Lauridsen, that choirs understand his music and the related message. Through an open dialog and a singing together of some of his works he offers some background information and intentions about his compositions. Because of the intensive discussion regarding text and music the singers will receive a deep insight in the composer’s way of thinking and his musical language. The aim of the workshop will be to familiarize the singers with the musical idea and to encourage them for new own interpretations.

Registrations for the workshops and the choir competition in Monterey are welcome until June 6, 2016. More information about the Golden State Choral Trophy can be found on the event’s website.
