Sing with Singh

During the choral festival Golden State Choral Trophy, which will be held from November 20-24, 2016 in Monterey/California, Vijay Singh – an outstanding performer, composer, teacher, conductor, and clinician – will give a jazz workshop for participating ensembles and choirs. We are pleased to have the US American choral expert aboard the INTERKULTUR event.

Vijay Singh lives in Ellensburg, Washington where he is Professor of Music at the Central Washington University. A graduate of Willamette University (B. M. Ed/Clarinet & Voice) and Portland State University (Choral Conducting/Vocal Performance), he has been rapidly gaining international attention for his eclectic musical compositions, performances, workshops, and conducting appearances.

As an active performer, Vijay performed as featured bass-baritone soloist with different notable groups and as a member of the award-winning a cappella jazz quartet "Just 4 Kicks", in which INTERKULTUR juror and workshop leader Kirby Shaw is also a member. Vijay has appeared in professional opera and musical theatre productions, and maintains an active career in oratorio, recital, and contemporary music.

Vijay served 4 years as National Repertoire and Standards Chair for Jazz Choirs in the American Choral Director’s Association (ACDA) and is in demand as a guest conductor. He has conducted All-State choirs in over twenty-five states and has the distinction of conducting both All-State Concert Choirs and Jazz Choirs within the same year. Vijay has served as jury member at international festivals in Canada, the Netherlands, Germany, and the United States. Also at the INTERKULTUR festival Golden State Choral Trophy he will act as a juror.

During his workshop in Monterey Vijay Singh will teach on Vocal Jazz and Pop Group singing including repertoire, technique, rhythm and other style elements. All topics will be dealt with in an open and practice-orientated "singing together" session. So everyone can use the chance to immediately try the new skills of popular music styles.
