International Franz Schubert Choir Competition in a new guise

The summer event becomes a "Winterreise"

Franz Schubert Choir Competition

Franz Schubert represents a central figure in the repertoire of numerous choirs all over the world. Thus the biennial International Franz Schubert Choir Competition in Vienna was attended e.g. by choirs from Indonesia, Singapore, the USA, Turkey and Vietnam. In order to emphasize the focus of this competition even more, some changes have been introduced to the current edition, which will take place from November 11-15, 2020.

The summer festival will now, following the wishes of many previously participating choirs and interested ensembles, once again become a pre-Christmas winter event. In addition, the name was adapted to the altered meaning: "Sing'n'Joy Vienna" becomes the "International Franz Schubert Choir Competition". A new logo with signature and likeness brings the namesake into focus.

In addition, the choirs can look forward to a fantastic new venue where to follow the great singing tradition of the worldwide renowned “Wiener Sängerknaben”: Competitions will take place in the MuTh, the official concert hall of the Sängerknaben.

MuTh is bringing things together: bridging music and theatre, linking the classical and the avant-garde, and combining openness with variety. Reflecting this, MuTh is firmly established in the cultural landscape of Vienna. Artists and theatre-goers alike have welcomed the concert hall’s superb acoustic, its atmosphere, its modern facilities, and the closeness between performers and audience. The Hall’s magnificent sound – enriched by the use of acoustic panels and specially-designed seating – is especially noteworthy and marks an ideal setting for the Franz Schubert Choir Competition.

What remains? The categories are divided into Mixed / Equal Voice Choirs Level of Difficulty I and II, Chamber Choirs and Vocal Ensembles, Children's and Youth Choirs and Sacred Choir Music a cappella. The Franz Schubert Choir Prize 2020 will again be awarded to the choir that achieves the highest score in the interpretation of an original work by Franz Schubert. The Friendship Concerts, the reception in the Town Hall and above all the joint visit to the Heurigen will remain popular events on the agenda.
