Hull to host new international choir competition in spring 2023

Choirs meet for the first time for an INTERKULTUR competition in Great Britain

Hull International Choir Competition

INTERKULTUR's international choir competitions and festivals have already taken place in more than 60 cities around the world, and in 2023 a new one will be added to the map: the city of Hull in Yorkshire, UK will welcome choirs from all over the world to the East Coast of England from April 27 to May 1, 2023.

For the first time, international singers will have the opportunity to experience an INTERKULTUR competition on English soil. And with beautiful historical buildings, lively entertainment, bustling shops, traditional pubs and tasty restaurants, the city of Hull is a hidden treasure.

Cllr Rosemary Pantelakis, portfolio holder for corporate services, museums & cultural assets, said:

“We are delighted to announce this news after months of hard work behind-the-scenes, and we’re looking forward to welcoming choirs from around the world to our ‘singing city’.

As well as bringing our streets, squares and community spaces alive with the sound of music, the five-day multi-event will be great for Hull's hospitality industry."

As a city with a rich choral history, from early church music to modern initiatives with a focus on outreach and inclusivity, Hull is truly a "singing city", making it the perfect host for an international choral competition.

There will be lots of different ways to get involved for singers and choirs who want to be a part of INTERKULTUR’s first choir meeting in England; there are competition categories for Choirs of Mixed and Equal Voices as well as for Children's and Youth Choirs or choirs with a special focus on a Musica Sacra or Pop, Jazz & Gospel repertoire.

In addition, there will be Evaluation Performances and Individual Coaching sessions to give choirs the opportunity to get valuable advice from international choral experts. Additional Friendship Concerts will open up the chance to meet other international choirs, to exchange ideas and to sing for each other.

Visiting choirs can look forward to performances in historic civic buildings, magnificent holy sites, public squares and vibrant marketplaces in the heart of Hull’s cultural communities. The beautiful Hull City Hall will open its doors to participating singers for the Opening and Closing Ceremonies, as well as the Awards Ceremony, which will turn it into a place filled with emotion, joy and excitement for the duration of the festival!

INTERKULTUR President Günter Titsch said:

“Choirs from all over Britain have been travelling to our international choir events for many, many years. So it's our huge pleasure that now we will be finally able to bring the world to them.

I'm sure that Hull will be an attractive destination for many choirs from abroad, which gives English choirs the opportunity to get in touch with choral music and traditions from other countries, learn from them and make new friendships for a lifetime.

My huge thanks go to our fantastic partners in the city of Hull, who have already been highly engaged with the preparations for this event. I am sure that thanks to them, each and every singer will feel warmly welcomed - like a visit at a good friend's home!
