Coro Giovanile Toscano to perform on the final day of "VOX LUCENSIS"
Choirs from 13 nations to perform at the international choir competition in Lucca
The Coro Giovanile Toscano (Tuscan Youth Choir), directed by Elisa Pasquini, will perform on the final day of the 2nd "Vox Lucensis" – Concorso Corale Internazionale to be held in Lucca from May 17-21, 2023. The event under the Artistic Direction of Giovanni Acciai together with Sara Matteucci, is organized by INTERKULTUR in collaboration with the "L. Boccherini" Conservatory of Music and the district of the Historic Center of the beautiful Tuscan city.
The event will open on Wednesday, May 17, at 18:00 h with the Opening Concert in the Church of San Paolino. At 16:00 PM there will be a parade of participating choirs walking from Piazza San Michele toward San Paolino. The concert will feature performances by some of the participating choirs and a joint choir performance of the piece "Vox Lucensis", which was written exclusively for the festival by Lucchese composer Saverio Rapezzi.
The competition, which is part of the "Boccherini" Conservatory's OPEN artistic season, will be divided into several a cappella and accompanied categories including Sacred Choral Music, Youth Choirs and Chamber Choirs, and will take place in the Church of San Pietro Somaldi and the Suffragio Auditorium at the conservatory. The performances will be judged by a panel of international choral experts consisting of Anna Ungureanu (Romania), Jean Kleeb (Brazil/Germany) and Sara Matteucci (Italy).
Saturday, May 20, marks the final day of the competition, which will move to San Francesco at 16:30 h for the final Grand Prize competition, where the best choirs will compete once again for the Vox Lucensis 2023 Grand Prize and a €1,500 prize money. After that, the performance of the Coro Giovanile Toscano will be eagerly awaited. The choir is one of the most appreciated ensembles in Italy, guest of several high-level national festivals and winner of the second and third prize at the International May Choir Competition "Prof. Georgi Dimitrov" in Varna (Bulgaria). The choir will present pieces by Luzzaschi, Marenzio, Monteverdi and Bettinelli.
Some non-competitive performances are scheduled in San Pietro Somaldi on Thursday at 21:00 h and in the Conservatory on Thursday at 18:00 h, Friday at 21:00 h and Saturday at 11:30 h. Also, as part of the festival, the Swedish choir Brunnsbo Musikklasser will sing at the noon mass on Sunday, May 21, in the Basilica of San Frediano.
The event is supported by the City of Lucca, the Tuscany Choirs Association, the Province of Lucca and the "L. Boccherini" Conservatory of Music.
Admission to all events is free of charge, seating is limited.
