Atmospheric Opening in Corfu

Audience was overwhelmed by voice power of 960 singers in the Municipal Theatre

Corfu International Festival & Choir Competition

Yesterday evening at 8:30 p.m. choirs and organizers of the festival gathered in the Municipal Theatre of Corfu for the grand Opening of the 1st Corfu International Festival and Choir Competition. The concert was officially opened with the Hymn to Corfu, performed by the Kerkyraiki Kantada Mandolinata. Following the representatives of the city and of INTERKULTUR welcomed the 960 singers from Greece, Cyprus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Romania and from Turkey on the small cozy island.

The rows of the audience were filled to the last place and everyone in the hall listened intently to the spectacular performances of the choirs on the stage. Especially the choir Mješoviti Hor "Srbadija", the only international choir to be performed this evening, impressed the audience with traditional folklore, including the song "Splet narodnih pjesama", a kind of medley of different folkloric songs. The singers from the “Pylaia - Chortiatis Youth Choir” from Thessaloniki, were also rewarded with applause for their folklore songs from the Macedonian region.

While all choirs of the festival sang together, a peaceful atmosphere spread in the hall. With the first tones of the Haitian song "Fèy oh!", also the last one in the concert was electrified and overwhelmed by the united voice power. A wonderful moment!

The Hellenic Radio Television Choir made a brilliant culmination with the spiritual "Joshua fit the Battle" and brought the evening to a perfect close.
