The region of Flanders in Belgium including the cities of Antwerp and Ghent as well as the Region Gangwon in South Korea with PyeongChang and GangNeung are the Official Candidate Cities to host the 11th World Choir Games 2020. Both cities have sent an official bid which is currently being reviewed by INTERKULTUR.

INTERKULTUR President Günter Titsch:

“The region of Flanders in Belgium and the Gangwong Province in the Republic of Korea are two promising candidates to host the 11th World Choir Games 2020. Both provide a perfect infrastructure and accessibility as well as outstanding venues for competitions, concerts and Opening, Closing and Awards Ceremonies. We are checking the bids carefully – it will be a decision not easy to make!”

Gangwon Province in the Republic of Korea is currently famous for hosting the 2018 Winter Olympic Games in PyeongChang. This would be the second time to host the World Choir Games in a former Olympic City after the World Choir Games 2016 in Sochi, Russia, the 2014 Winter Olympic City. According to this experience, combining the atmosphere of a real Olympic area with the World Choir Games has a great value for participants and organizers.

Moonsoon Choi, Governor of Gangwon Province:

“Our province is known as the most beautiful, the safest, and also an international symbol of peace. To host the 11th World Choir Games 2020 to the Olympic Zone is significantly meaningful in terms of the Olympic legacy creation and cultural inspiration."

Flanders is a rising region in the north of Belgium, Europe. The cities of Ghent and Antwerp are two of the most important cities in this country. Due to its location in the heart of Europe and several official languages including Dutch and French the city enjoys an international reputation and aims to be a friendly host to its international guests during the World Choir Games.

Geert Bourgeois, Minister-President of the Government of Flanders, Flemish Minister for Foreign Policy and Immovable Heritage and other leading representatives of the Flemish Government stated:

“Hosting the Games in Flanders will inspire people of all ages, young and old, to grow the choral tradition in Flanders and beyond. We will use this iconic event to grow the singing community in the region, and the Games will act as a stimulus for participants to develop singing in their own communities.”

Flanders or Gangwon, Belgium or Republic of Korea?
A decision will be made in April 2018. INTERKULTUR will then announce the host city of the 11th World Choir Games 2020 immediately and prepare the official presentation during this year’s 10th World Choir Games 2018 in Tshwane, South Africa.
