Champions of the World Choir Games announced

Russia is leading the medals table

World Choir Games 2016

Finally the time has come: The best choirs of the 9th World Choir Games have been announced. At the Awards Ceremony in the Bolshoy Ice Dome this morning the winners of the competition were awarded. 283 choirs from 36 nations demonstrated their musical skills during the last 10 days.

Already after the first part of the World Choir Games the first choirs were nominated as Champions and category winners. The results of the second part have been announced at a festive Awards Ceremony. The participating choirs could cheer for 29 Golden, 43 Silver and 4 Bronze Diplomas in The Open Competition.

In The Champions Competition there was a special reason to celebrate. The leading choir of the INTERKULTUR World Rankings, the Stellenbosch University Choir from South Africa could defended its title as best amateur choir of the world. The choir won the categories “Spiritual”, “Musica Contemporea” and “Musica Sacra a cappella”. Altogether 61 Golden and 40 Silver Medals have been awarded.

In addition to the Diplomas and Medals the Hänssler-INTERKULTLUR CD Award was overhanded already for the third time. Three top class choirs from China, Russia and South Africa were the shortlist candidates. But finally the Stellenbosch University Choir has won the CD record with Hänssler Classic.

Also after the second Awards Ceremony of the World Choir Games the host country Russia still leads the medals table with 88 medals, followed by China with 56 medals and South Africa with 7 medals.
