Croatia meets Mexico

…and moves on to Cincinnati

Traditions from different countries meet: in a project video by the Croatian choir Klapa Kastav and the music group MARIACHI ESTRELLA DE PUEBLA from Mexico. Also in July 2012 different traditions and trips into the music tradition of the countries are on the agenda in Cincinnati USA. Then the 7th World Choir Games (WCG) is taking place in the city along the Ohio River.
Klapa Kastav, the choir from Croatia, will be there again this year.

The piece “Pod orehon” (Under the walnut tree) combines typical sounds and voices from Mexico with typical Croatian choral singing into an emotive song – a great result from a Croatian-Mexican cooperation (see here).

Mariachi is one of the many facets of Mexican folk music. Outside Mexico it is the most famous amongst many Mexican musical styles. In 2011 this special kind of music was added to UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage Lists.

In 1992 the singers of Klapa Kastav came together for the very first time. Since 1995 they have been singing as a chamber choir and performing at various competitions and festivals at home and abroad. Also they attended several World Choir Games and festivals of recent years and constantly enjoy the atmosphere of INTERKULTUR competitions, as they told in an interview with a regional television channel during the first The American International Choral Festival 2010 in St. Louis.

In 2012 the World Choir Games will be held for the first time on the American continent. On July 4, 2012, the American National Day, the Opening ceremony will strongly contribute to the choirs’ good mood during the event. More than 320 choirs in all have already registered. If you’re still interested in registering your choir, please contact info(at)worldchoirgames.com.
