Mourning for Aleksandar Vujić
Serbian composer passes away at the age of 71
INTERKULTUR mourns for the Serbian representative in the World Choir Council and an important supporter of the Choral Olympic movement: The Serbian composer, pianist and conductor Aleksandar Vujić passed away on September 6, 2017 in Belgrade after a long and serious illness.
Vujić studied piano, composition and conducting at the University of the Arts in Belgrade, where he also held a chair as a professor later on. He was founder and director of the Chamber Orchestra „Sinfonietta Belgrad“ and the Madrigal choir of the Faculty of Music Belgrade, amongst others. In 2003 he was appointed Artistic Director of the newly founded Serbian Choir Association. He was awarded many prizes and honors, for example the „Kodály Zoltan Medal“ from the Hungarian government in 1983 and he also won the Robert Schumann Composing Competition in 1995.
Aleksandar Vujić was further an important supporter of INTERKULTUR’s work. From the very beginnings he was a member of the World Choir Council representing the choral scene in Serbia. Further he paved the way for the first INTERKULTUR choir competition and festival in Serbia, which took place in the spa town Vrnjačka Banja in 2014. Further, he acted as a juror at several INTERKULTUR choir competitions, lastly at the International Choir Competition and Festival in Bad Ischl, Austria in 2014.
On top of this Aleksandar Vujić initiated many cooperations between the Balkans and thus played a special role in the choral scene of South East Europe.
INTERKULTUR has lost a good friend and supporter. Our thoughts and prayers are with his widow Annemarie Kovenz-Vujić, his family, friends and companions.
