Returning the benefits of music to the community

University choir shares its passion for choral singing with the community

World Choir Games 2018

Situated at the heart of Mankweng, 30km East of Polokwane City, South Africa, the University of Limpopo initiated the UL Choristers in the early 90’s. The choir was established by students of the University in order to participate in university community activities such as graduation ceremonies, memorial services and other official university gatherings. The choir grew constantly and started participating in competitive choral music Eisteddfods such as South African Tertiary Institutions Choral Associations (SATICA), Varsity Sport Sing and Old Mutual National Choir Festivals, and won several championships. The UL Choristers is the current reigning Overall Champions of SATICA after bagging a total of 9 trophies and best conductor in the Gold Category in the 2017 SATICA Eisteddfod held in Durban, South Africa. The choir has also performed in other countries such as United States of America (USA). It has established music collaborations with national and international institutions what enabled them to visit several music institutions in countries such as USA and Swaziland.  Its singers have since maintained ongoing strong musical and academic relations, bringing the motto “building bridges though music” to life.

Choir projects include instituting music development programs in Limpopo Province by introducing instrument and vocal training for schools, churches and community choirs, in a National Lotteries Board (NLB) sponsored program. The ultimate goal of the choir is to promote choral music development throughout the Limpopo Province and to provide a Music Development Center that will be accessible to all choral music lovers. For these aims the “UL Choristers Family” as the group is affectionately known, relies upon its three pillars: The love for choral music, love for one another and great sense of professional musicianship.
