6th World Choir Games

July 15 - 26, 2010 Shaoxing / Shanghai (China)

Shaoxing 2010

The World Choir Games (WCG) in Shaoxing, China, have once again provided impressive proof of the power of music to unite people in a spirit of peace and understanding. 472 choirs and jurors from 83 nations – comprising a total of well over 20,000 active participants – took part in the world’s biggest choir competition. During the twelve days of song and music, more than 220,000 visitors flocked to the competitions, concerts and events marking the city of Shaoxing’s jubilee celebrations. In 2010, the city on the banks of the Pearl River is celebrating the 2,500th anniversary of its founding.

In a message to the choral singers of the world, US President Barack Obama also stressed music’s potential “to transcend languages, cultures and borders.” The message was read out to thousands of participants at the closing ceremony of the 6th World Choir Games.

In the Champions Competition at the WCG, 66 gold, 117 silver and 28 bronze medals were awarded. 19 choirs earned the highest accolade, “Champions of the World Choir Games”. The People’s Republic of China won the most gold medals (22), followed by Indonesia (7) and South Africa (6). The USA and China/Hong Kong garnered five gold medals each. In the Open Competition, the jury awarded 74 gold, 133 silver and 32 bronze diplomas. Not only have the absolute numbers of active participants and awards pointed to another milestone in the history of the WCG. The results in the various categories also testified to the excellent standard and growing diversity of the choral cultures represented.

"There are so many impressions imprinted in my mind and heart. Most of all, the awarding and the closing ceremony touched our hearts the most. I take my hats off to the organizers of the World Choir Games. Our principal stated in reference to Interkultur, 'they know what they’re doing'."

Nancy C. Roman, Miriam College High School Glee Club, Philippines

"As a member of the jury, I could not help being continuously fascinated by the diversity of choral expression and the variety of repertoire. This was a rare opportunity to open a window into the world of choral music."

Prof. André de Quadros, Juror, USA

"We'll never forget the good things and wonderful experience of singing together with other choirs and with orchestra under [Gábor Hollerung's] direction. It was a great honor te me and my singers to be part of that experience. We can't wait for the next opportunity to make music together!"

Marijan Milić, Čarobna Frula, Croatia

"After two eventful weeks at the World Choir Games in Shaoxing I would like to thank all of you for the honourable invitation to act as a juror and for the friendly and engaged support as well as for the pleasant working atmosphere in a competent surrounding."

Jürgen Budday, Juror, Germany
