Discover beautiful Vietnam

Traditional handicraft villages are a popular touristic hot spot

Vietnam International Choir Competition

Handicrafts have a long tradition in Vietnam. In former times the people living in small villages made handicraft works to meet their own needs. The techniques were kept as a secret and taught from generation to generation within each village. For example, people in the village engaged in pottery, mat weaving, silk weaving, wood-carving or bronze casting. Their products developed to a very skillful and sophisticated art.

Time passed, people went to the towns, professionalized the handicraft they had been taught in their villages and it developed from households to guilds to a very important institution in the Vietnamese handicraft industry. The name of a village became a trademark for the handicraft products the villagers produced – until today.

In the present age there are thousands of handicraft villages in Vietnam, including roughly 300-400 traditional villages, which maintain the country’s handicraft heritage. The villages are meanwhile a popular tourist destination and therefore generate economic benefits and at the same time are helping to preserve Vietnam’s cultural and historical heritage.

A unique chance to discover beautiful Vietnam with friends and fellow singers will be the Vietnam International Choir Competition in Hoi An from June 7-11, 2017. Even if most handicraft villages are located in the north of Vietnam, you can also discover some of them in Hoi An. You can visit, for example villages for carpentry, pottery making or vegetable planting. A list of the 10 best known handicraft villages in all over Vietnam can be found here.
