A first date with Berlin

Things to know about the capital of Germany

Grand Prix of Nations

Berlin is unique – even though the city’s name is assigned more than 100 times all over the world, including Guinea, Ohio, Canada, Russia, Bolivia and South Africa. Towns, villages, valleys, islands and mountains bear the name of the German capital. Through their various facets they are part of the multinational Berlin family.

Historically, Berlin was several times the capital of the German state. Starting as the capital of the Marquisate and the Electorate of Brandenburg, the city at the Spree River later became the capital of the Kingdom of Prussia and the German Empire. Since the establishment of the inner-German border East Berlin was the capital of the German Democratic Republic (GDR). Since the German reunification in 1990 Berlin is the capital of Germany, as known today.

Berlin is a cosmopolitan city, a vibrant metropolis in the heart of Europe and versatile like no other. The capital of the Federal Republic of Germany has a lot to offer, in an economically as well as in a cultural way. This stems not only from a formative town history – the division of Berlin into East and West by the construction of the wall in 1961 – but also from the cosmopolitanism of its 3.5 million citizens and its large range of cultural events: Berlinale, Berlin Biennale, Musikfest Berlin, Carnival of Cultures, Berlin Festival, Berlin Light Festival, Long night of religions, BERvokal, Berlin Jazz Festival and many more. The city hosts about 140 theaters, 175 museums and 300 cinemas.

Berlin is divided into several neighborhoods, the hip trendy neighborhood next to new blocks, designer boutiques and Berlin High Society - every neighborhood has its own, sometimes crazy charm. Check it out!
