Will it be “Cymru am byth” - “Wales forever” in Riga?

Welsh choir tries to top off its victory at the national choir competition Côr Cymru 2017

This year’s choral journey has not yet come to an end for the Welsh choir Côr Merched Sir Gâr. By winning the national Welsh choir contest Côr Cymru, a televised competition open to children’s, youth, female, male and mixed choirs, it qualified for the Eurovision Choir of the Year TV show where it will have to beat eight other European top choirs in order to bring home the Eurovision trophy.

Côr Merched Sir Gâr is made up of female Secondary School girls from the county of Carmarthenshire in West Wales. The choir was formed five years ago and is run by the Carmarthenshire County Council's Music Service. The ensemble is conducted by Mr Islwyn Evans, a highly successful and prominent Welsh conductor who has won numerous awards with many of his choirs. The youth choir performs a wide range of repertoire in many languages including Welsh.

During its five year history Côr Merched Sir Gâr has enjoyed a significant amount of success. It was recently invited to perform at the Royal Albert Hall in London as part of the Music For Youth Proms and won much praise from the international panel of judges at the tough competition in Wales’ premier choral competition.

Eurovision Choir of the Year is a new format in the Eurovision event family led by the Eurovision Song Contest. Its first edition will be held in Riga on July 22 and be broadcasted in nine European countries. More information at www.eurovisionchoir.tv.
