Open Arts Community Choir to join European Choir Games

Inclusive choir brings its members on a journey to Riga

European Choir Games 2017

There are more than 100 choirs that met the Early Bird Deadline to register for the Grand Prix of Nations & 3rd European Choir Games in Riga 2017. One of them is very special: the Open Arts Community Choir from Northern Ireland.

The Open Arts Community Choir (OACC) is an award winning, dynamic, inclusive choir based in Belfast. Together the singers are demonstrating how people from different cultural backgrounds, with or without disabilities, come together through the medium of song. They are dedicated to providing high quality performances across a variety of musical genres and have recorded 3 albums to date.

The OACC is already experienced in travelling abroad to sing. They have performed at high profile events and choral festivals all over the UK and Ireland, sweeping the boards at the Bangor International Choral Festival, 2012-2016.

In August 2012 they took their unique brand of community spirit to the USA, performing in the famous Milwaukee Irish Fest, gaining new legions of fans and proving themselves to be positive ambassadors for Northern Ireland. They have also featured in Irish and UK national televised choral competitions like “Last Choir Standing” in 2008 performing a song that could even be the choir’s anthem: Labi Siffre’s “Something Inside so Strong”:

At the European Choir Games the Open Arts Community Choir will compete in two categories of the Open Competition: “Adult Choirs” and “Folkore a cappella”. If they do well, they can still qualify for the European Champions Competition and even for the Grand Prix of Nations.

We are glad to have this great choir in Riga and look forward to welcome them on stage next summer!
