Guangzhou – capital of choirs

3000 choirs

Singing is highly important in the city of Guangzhou. There are roughly 3000 officially registered choirs in town comprising totally 15 000 singers who’d like to make a name on music and singing or partially they already did.

Over the years the efforts of individual choirs have been supported by cultural departments. This includes regular performances on public places and squares, which are very popular with the people. It shows a deep connection to the tradition of singing and creates an atmosphere of harmony through joint choral singing.

So it’s not surprising that some groups are highly committed to this movement and regularly travel to national and international competitions and bring home best results. Also some of them successfully return from INTERKULTUR events, such as Guangdong Experimental Middle School Choir (5th World Choir Games in Graz), Xinghai Choir from Panyu and Little Lark Choir from Guangzhou (4th World Choir Games). Also Children’s Choir Tianhe won a Gold Medal in Graz 2008. However, with an abundance of roughly 3000 choirs these groups are not the only ones to look back on those experiences.

Guangzhou, as an active choral city, will host an attractive new INTERKULTUR event in 2012. From November 8 to 14, 2012 the 1st Xinghai Prize International Choir Championships will be held there. More than 100 choirs from all around the world are expected to come. Please find registration information on our website.
