A review: Concorso Corale Internazionale 2012

Enjoy and Sing!

For 20 years a close friendship between Riva del Garda, host city of choir competitions at Lake Garda and INTERKULTUR has existed. Since twenty years numerous choirs of the world have been coming here to attend a choir competition as well as many local choirs from the region and from whole Italy. A documentary video about the competition appreciates this special commitment of Italian choirs in Riva del Garda:

“The competition wouldn’t exist without these choirs,” says Piroska Horváth. “And without enjoying that much popularity in Trentino and whole Italy it wouldn’t be what it is – a competition in Italy!”

Choral music means much to many people. “Enjoy and sing!” says Enrico Miaroma in an interview; he’s the conductor of Coro Città di Ala from Ala in the Dolomites. In spring 2012 he performed with his group in the Male Choirs category and in front of the jury – the result was impressive and their nervousness was rewarded: They became Category Winner.

Another participating choir from Italy was the youth Choir “Cor di Jëuni Gherdëina” from S. Cristina in South Tirol. They did not participate in the competition for the first time and this year they sang a piece written by US composer Morten Lauridsen, for example. It has always been a dream of conductor Samuel Runggaldier to perform the work “O Magnum Mysterium” with the youth choir. This dream came true in 2012, in Riva del Garda.

Lauridsen himself can be seen in Cincinnati in July 2012, where the composer will be available for interested choirs during a workshop and a Celebration Concert at this year’s World Choir Games. But first of all, watch a short review of the competition in Italy with music by Lauridsen, please click here.
